Breightmet Boy Posted February 4, 2018 Author Posted February 4, 2018 Care to go into detail over the proper school v academy? They don’t seem to be doing as well as state run schools, St Catherine’s at Breightmet hasn’t got the glowing reports of other schools. Quote
Guest Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 The issue some parents have with faith schools is that they want the advantages of the reputedly better schooling without the faith. Strange don't you think? Me? It's wrong, in my view. I would set things up differently Quote
Salford Trotter Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Me? It's wrong, in my view. I would set things up differently No, not you but it’s generally recognised that faith schools deliver a better education though not exclusively of course. Some parents, as exampled on this thread, will manipulate the system to suit their needs and it’s a huge hypocrisy. I’ll let others debate the rights and wrongs of that but as I served as a school governor of high achieving RC primary and secondary schools I have witnessed first hand the lengths that families are prepared to go to in order to get their children in the ‘right’ school. Big E Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Bloke at work (Oldham / Manchester ish) has his two kids in c of E schools and he has a register for church every week. Miss more than 6 a year and you won't get in the school. The priest (or whatever they are called) also said that the donations were down so he asked everyone to set up a £10 a week standing order to the church. Fuck. That. The church are cunts. Still wanna find out where that £20k my mum “lost” ended up. Quote

Tonge moor green jacket Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Whereas pre academy, withins was leading the way? Good lord Aye. The academy status has led to some investment but its not the be all and end all. The open day we went to there before our lad chose, was great apart from one thing. The head. Shocking public skills and if that's how he manages the school then its no wonder its struggling. Quote
radcliffe white Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 We did the school open evenings last year and the ones closest to us were dreadful including one I went which is now heavily multicultural So we started daughter off at church luckily enough we got married there so vicar knows the score regarding the old points Quote

Can't comment on the head but that school has long struggled to achieve results, largely due to the kids that go Nowt to do with it being an academy Quote
Ghana White Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Staying in Bolton you want to get up to near turton and cannon slade. Don't move to horwich unless your getting him to Catholic School, Rivi has been in worse schools list in the country. Bolton had a few entries, I think it was Harper green, st Catherine's (withins) and kearsley (George toms) Quote
Ghana White Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Agree with casino on withins as well. We could only play them at footy on a Friday night when I was at school cause they wouldn't come back to play on a Saturday morning and it was proper battle. Rumour was we weren't allowed to play George Toms but I never found out how true that was. Quote
Breightmet Boy Posted February 4, 2018 Author Posted February 4, 2018 Whereas pre academy, withins was leading the way? Good lord Probably not leading the way, but at least some learned how to do the 25m in the pool Quote
DazBob Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Is Rivi that bad? Bird is thinking about sending her's there. Quote
only1swanny Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 You want to know about rivi.. I'd not send my kids there.. I did my teacher training there. We're buying in reach of st james.. look at their results.. Ofsted reports are a guide and show the school on one day. It's not a 100 % accurate view of the school. Quote

It most certainly isn't, I know of schools sending their most challenging kids home when OFSTED visit. I've had a lot of dealing with St James though, and it is a good school without doubt, but not necessarily for everyone. Quote
Ghana White Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/englands-worst-schools-revealed-your-11913069 There's that list. 4 from Bolton on it. Forgot about St James heard that's a good school now off a few people Quote

Alf Hartigan Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Is the fact that Bolton is a gateway town a contributing factor? Kids speaking 3/4 different languages can't be great. there's 2,3.or 4 from most boroughs. being a gateway town will benefit us, not in our lifetime though Quote
Ghana White Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Don't think being a gateway is an issue. Plenty of schools in Manchester who have every language under the sun and haven't made the list. Quote

The open evening was very good once we'd got away from the wet lettuce's speech. Anyone taking on a head role there has got their work cut out, but there are tales of failing schools in England etc being turned around by inspirational people. I've had dealings with the chap in charge at little lever and I'd have preferred my lad to go there even if they were writing on slate with chalk. Shame really as st Catherines is a state of the artime place with excellent facilities. Little lever is miles away in terms of infrastructure with more kids than it was designed for, but gives a very positive and pleasing impression. Not perfect by any means, but I'm confident he'll do well. Quote

Guest Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Trouble in Bolton is you have schools slapped between decent areas and very large poorer areas. Whilst obviously that happens everywhere its very pronounced in Bolton for some reason. It means a few schools, whatever they do, will always struggle with some of their intake. Quote
