Breightmet Boy Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 My nephew is after buying his first home, he keeps coming in with ideas and how lovely they look inside, but he’s not taking into consideration his 1yr old child. So I thought I’d plant a seed in his head and explain that education for his child is paramount, so if I was in his shoes I’d aim at making sure the local school is more important than the wallpaper what’ll be outdated cometh the day his lad embarks on his first day of schooling. So, as always, I thought I’d ask the class on where and what’s the best area for him to buy, taking into consideration the education of our little Theo. He’s got about £120k at his disposal, I don’t think Haywood or Breightmet are good as he’s better being educated in a proper school, not a academy. Quote
miamiwhite Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 With a one year old....he shouldn’t have wallpaper, as the little one will soon be drawing on it and destroying the £50 a roll print. Get em painted to start with. Over Hulton is nice....extended part of MG now. HTH. PS - you’re on the wrong thread mate. Quote
Breightmet Boy Posted February 3, 2018 Author Posted February 3, 2018 Just gathered I’m on the wrong thread, oops ;-) Quote
Casino Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Care to go into detail over the proper school v academy? Quote

Too far in the future to be bothering about secondary schools. Could change somewhat in a decade. Any way my lads at little lever and we live in Breightmet. Neighbours have kids at Elton and tottington. I'd suggest looking on relevant websites re crime stats, schools etc. Access (safe) to parks and open spaces as somewhere to play. Quote
Casino Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 And anyway, child could go to thornleigh from harwood Quote
Winchester White Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Academy means nothing by the way, some superb schools are academy's but maybe not your way. 120k can get you a decent little house in most parts of Bolton and surrounding towns. Quote
Casino Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Academy means nothing by the way It's certainly not a good reason to rule a school out Quote
Mixu Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Harwood is a great place to live and raise kids but Withins (or whatever) is a shit school (or academy). Saying that, my 2 went to Turton which was a good school ten years back. Quote
barryk32 Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Johnson Fold is one of the best schools in the area. Have a look at the OFSTED reports and look around the catchment area of the school you like Quote
Duck Egg Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 He could move somewhere leafy but then his kid doesn't get first choice of school and ends up in Johnny Fow CP. Buy as nice a house in as nice an area as you can find Quote
MickyD Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Do what everyone else does and tell them all to go to church regularly for a few years. That'll get them in Canon Slade. Quote
stevieb Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Bloke at work (Oldham / Manchester ish) has his two kids in c of E schools and he has a register for church every week. Miss more than 6 a year and you won't get in the school. The priest (or whatever they are called) also said that the donations were down so he asked everyone to set up a £10 a week standing order to the church. Fuck. That. Quote

When I used to stand in my kids' primary school yard waiting with them for the 9.00 bell, I used to overhear the mums talking: Only another 2 years of church and once they're in Canon Slade that'll be my church-going over with. We were lucky that my son was in a very low birth year and he got in Turton and thus my daughter got in through sibling link. Most of my daughter's class got St Catherine's Academy. Quote
Carlos Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 This year you didn't need any church points to get into Canon Slade apparently. Imagine doing 11 years of that unnecessarily. Quote

We moved from Manc City centre when the lad was 1 to Horwich and we've got him in the Catholic school we wanted him to go in. St Joseph's on the doorstep for the secondary school. It might not end up being that when he's old enough but you never know. Ofsted reports probably have a big bearing on house values. It's a fucking mine field. Quote
Biggish Dave Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 This year you didn't need any church points to get into Canon Slade apparently. Imagine doing 11 years of that unnecessarily. I would never do years of blackmail to get a child into a school, I disagree whole heartedly with it. I know people do it and fair play to them but if a child is bright enough, there should be a place at a decent school for them without having to bore their parents to death for years. Church these days is old biddies and people who have to be there for the sake of it. Quote
Casino Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Generally there isn't a problem with schools until you introduce kids Stick enough scrotey kids with parents who don't give a fcuk in any school and said school will go downhill If a parent cares enough about their kids education to turn up at church regular as clockwork, chances are theyll be decent kids Quote
Alf Hartigan Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Parents should be worrying more about how they are bringing up their children rather than which school they should be picking. It's a lottery with regards to OFSTED reports, they can change from year to year, but maybe concerns if a school is placed in 'special measures'. Quote

Guest Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Do what everyone else does and tell them all to go to church regularly for a few years. That'll get them in Canon Slade. The right answer, unfortunately Or just move to Heaton/Lostock and go to Bolton School Quote
Salford Trotter Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 (edited) The issue some parents have with faith schools is that they want the advantages of the reputedly better schooling without the faith. Strange don't you think? Edited February 4, 2018 by Salford Trotter Quote
