With due respect to the people working hard to tackle the virus, we don't really need to be beating our chests about our national response. A little reflection on the various missteps and miscalculations that have led to an island nation with advanced resources being at number 4 on the list of deaths per million, with San Marino, Belgium and Andorra the only 3 to fare worse, would be appropriate before the bragging commences. There's no way to spin the initial response to this as anything other than poor. So yes, if we've got our act together now, good, but I would sooner be in the position of Germany that doesn't have 200,000 tests per day because they managed to keep it down in the first place than the UK which patently didn't. If you follow the link you get: Quote On testing, Britain is now carrying out more than any other European country at over 200,000 per day – including 2.6 million more tests than Germany. Even with such high testing rates, Britain is now reporting fewer Coronavirus cases than many European countries. Britain now has only 9.6 cases per million vs the EU’s average of 12.5, and is well below France and Spain’s record. Quote

To me, taken in isolation, the first stat quoted by the Guido Fawkes site suggests that this country is doing very well. By combining it with the second stat: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1104709/coronavirus-deaths-worldwide-per-million-inhabitants/ we get a more accurate picture of the present situation. We are testing massive numbers because the virus ran amok through our society and killed many more of us than it did in the nations that are currently testing fewer people. It's a bit like the tests which showed that Dexamethasone was an effective treatment. We were able to get actionable data from them due to the large number of sick people on hand. Quote

ErnestTurnip Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 We made people start doing it last Friday in our shop, giving them a disposable one if they didn't have one with them - only one person complained and vast majority of the others had their own. Do we think Casino has taken on a mystery shopper job while he's furloughed ? Quote

Walked through the market place and I’d say 95% were wearing masks. Noticed one of two without with a smug look on their face. I’ve seen the same look on people wearing United shirts.😊 I have a different mask to the one on my profile photo. Quote
