Its not about who you hate most personally. Everyone will have a different club. Mines obviously Blackpool but apart from a little core of their support, Preston outweighs anything by a country mile. Not just football either, the towns just dont get on.

I just dont get our fans not wanting a proper derby fixture. I can't think of many other clubs without a proper derby rival.

Folk ask you on holiday who your rivals are and you say United, they just look at you blankly as if to say what the fuck.

Its like me saying Jenna Jameson is my ex because I had few wanks over her in the 90s.

Just embrace the Wigan thing, they despise us, our younguns despise them and its all just good fun innit.

Its as close as we will ever be to having a proper derby rival.

Just get stuck in.

I hear you logically.

I just don’t feel it.

Will always be the scum for me. I hate em on par with my support for us.

Wigan. I’ll hate on Sat. But I hate Fulham when we play em etc. I know one bloke who’s a Wigan fan I think he did for attention seeking I suspect. Just don’t have the passion to take em seriously.

Why this need to hate anybody ?... support your club yes, spend ridiculous amounts following a dream yes, kick the fucking dog when you lose yes, but why does hate come into anything that just doesn't matter...

I reserve my hatred for things that deserve it ...everytime I drive near Derian House my blood runs cold with the sadness that fills that place and that disease that makes it necessary...now I hate that bastard with a passion and it cares little for what colour football shirt you buy.

My feelings too. Too much hate in society in general

That said, it is perhaps just down to "verbage" (as an old gaffer would say) and the words folk choose to use.

If we lose, I'll hate the feeling though! 😁

I’m 32 - I grew up hating United and saw them as our main rivals whilst we were in and around the same league. I still look out for their result and hope they lose to whoever they’re playing but I don’t class them as rivals anymore as they’re in a different stratosphere of football to us and have been for over a decade.

Blackburn were a close second, mainly due to us being of a very similar level up until I was about 25 and because our school had loads of Blackburn fans so there was a tangible rivalry and impact of how results went. I can’t say I’m too arsed about them anymore but that would probably change if / when we’re back in the same league as them and taking 5-6 thousand over to Ewood for a couple of years.

Wigan never registered when I was younger, mainly because I can only really think of 1 Wigan fan that I knew growing up and I think I’m right in saying we only started playing each other once I was in my early-mid teens (about 04-05ish?) by which point I’d already had years of being surrounded by United and Blackburn fans. Now though, I’d say they are our main rivals - we’ve tracked each other through the leagues for 15 years or so, we’re next door to them, we both take big followings to each other and there’s always a bit of needle on and off the pitch. The strange thing is that I still don’t personally know any Wigan fans, so losing doesn’t have the same impact that it used to do with United and Blackburn back in the day where you’d have the piss taken out of you for the next week, but it’s still the game that I most want to win this year and still the first result after ours that I’ll check - hoping that they’ve lost.

If we get back into the higher leagues and spend more time around the Blackburn and United then I’m sure that rivalry would come back (maybe less so with United as I’m sure their newer generation of fans would say exactly the same thing as our older fans say about Wigan), but for now the idea of those twats celebrating in our away end again is not a good thought and I’d take any kind of win.

Good post and at 36 is one I can largely relate to, minus the Blackburn fan bit as our school was mainly Bolton, Utd and City. Always took pride in the fact we were 8 miles from Wigan and yet our school had more Huddersfield fans than Latics.

It was always Blackburn and Utd for me as a kid and Latics didn’t register at all. Even wanted them to come up from Division Two so we had a local game.

I had no idea how much they hated us until I started working there at the start of their promotion season to the Prem and found out just how much they hated us. Even then, we all thought they’d have a year or two in the Prem and then drop back to whence they came, long to be forgotten.

The yoof now have known nothing different, the intensity has grown over the years and the kick off changes tell you all you need to know really.

Bang on this.

United don't even register with me, all my mates are united fans so it's good to mock their decade slump but that's as far as it goes.

I really fucking hate Wigan.

Perspective is everything and football isn’t the be all and end all, I agree

but in a way it’s good to have “hatred” of another team. Saturday certainly gets my heart going more than the last few fixtures.

In a sort of paradoxical way, I’m quite glad we have Wigan as a team that I can love to hate.

It will be shit  if we lose the bragging rights, but I just wont look at social media much if that happens whereas others will spend hours arguing with opposition fans and winding themselves up in the process. Each to their own.

But if we win, it will feel so much better than any other win.

I am in my 60s so I looked at Blackburn , Blackpool and Burnley as our rivals but never hated them it was just tribal it’s a generation thing our yoof look at Wigan now mainly because we have been playing each other more regularly but saying you hate a club why it takes too much energy to hate ! We all want to win which ever team we support that’s football .

I think that needs to be directed more to your tic friends.

On the day of a game I dislike whichever club we play, but have no real issue with opposition fans who actually bother to go to matches.

I don't really hate any club full-time as I'm far too busy just hating people/things in general 😉

Funny how perspective goes hand in hand with expectation. Almost diametrically opposed. When I was growing up we had literally fuck all with little expectation but everything in perspective concentrating on things that matter. As expectation rising perspective goes out the window .

Is that progress ?

Beltin collection here 🤣

@Rubberkex - The point I’m making is, that you’ve got a few on here who think there’s a rivalry and are expressing their views why. You’ve got some who don’t see that rivalry at all as they remember you playing Horwich RMI better and there’s some who agree with you that hatred is wasted energy.

Then there’s these knobheads above who take hatred to another level. So if you really do have a gripe then get on Twatter and LaticsSpeyk and spout your philosophy on there… to your own brother 😊

For me its always been Rovers. Wigan barely register. Little club come from non league, never really had a significant fan base, never really will. Just happen to be in the same league this season. Do Blackburn see Accrington as rivals. Definately not.

Same for me, Blackburn has always been the one that I really hate, miles above any other club......although Liverpool and then Man Utd do follow on

You can hate who you want, it doesn't make them a rival

For a club like us, football rivalry comes and goes

In my time since watching in the 90s, there was a thing for a while with Tranmere and Wolves

Us and Wigan have been at the same level near enough competing for the same thing for 20 years and being next door there'll always be a local rivalry

And in recent years it's definitely become more intense and focussed

I'm all for it

I’m probably one of the oldest posters on here & my recollections of rivalry go back a bit. When I was a yoof it was always t’Rovers mainly because they had a right mob of greasers who used to cause quite a bit of mayhem until they got a good sorting on Trinity st.Away games at Ewood were always feisty & we would fill the Darwen end.Blackpool was another rival who would chuck the kitchen sink at you (pre stabbing tragedy).PNE was usually a walkover . Burnley was interesting although they were usually at a slightly higher level than us. These in practical terms were our main rivals . As regards the stretford lot it was only the singing of Munich songs that created the impression of rivalry because we never played them which in hindsight was pathetic & embarrassing. Notwithstanding that I still want them to lose every game!
Wigan really only appeared on the scene when our dive down the leagues was cemented in the mid eighties.Springfield park was a jolly although they did beat us quite a lot.Worked with an pie-eater back then & if he hated us he definitely hid it well although he DID hate Wigan rugby. The Tranmere ‘thing’ came later with the main instigator being that balloon Aldridge , & some shithousery from his predecessor after the playoff final.

In essence rivalries do change depending on the topography of which league your in so Wigan should be no surprise especially with the yoof.

I had no idea the Bury ever hated us until about the Zac Clough penalty game, i used to look out for their results as a kid in the 70s, they used to K.O at 3:15 for some reason???

because their social club was a big source of income

why lose your customers at 245 when you had to shut at 3

thats why

I don’t recall rovers kids at Turton. Admittedly way before Sweep but nowadays there are large intakes of kids from Darwen/Blackburn into the 6th form; not so much the high school.

Well, last week I was at a meeting in Wigan, afterwards got changed into my running gear and had a Bolton training top on. Some bloke stopped me and we had a chat, he complained his grandkids were all Bolton fans despite being born in Wigan, had a quick chat about the league cup games that had just been played, shook hands and wished each other the best for the season.

All in all, a very pleasant exchange.
