I remember the article in the local news feeds about that old bloke, it was on North West news etc.  I immediately recognised him, a familiar face at Gigg Lane in the days they still had terraces, when I was last in the home end.

Im 58 years of old and it wasn't too until around the time Zach Clough put the pen in at Gigg lane that i even if realised that Bury didn't like to us.

I'd even been  to Gigg Lane a couple of times to Bury Games and i would probably have put a bit of change in the buckets had i been there.

You live & learn, see they are nothing to us. Probably what we are to Manchester clubs.

In the early 80s when they were aiming for promotion from Div 4 and we were fighting relegation from Div 2, they used to sing "We'll see you next season, Bolton Wanderers" and "We only hate Bolton Wanderers".  Its very hard to take offence when its about 200 teenagers singing it, all part of the game, who cares.

Certainly can't expect any council funding.

According to my dads mate AFC don't want Gigg, they've plans for a grass roots style ground that can be developed if the club gets bigger. 

Gigg is just a money pit. The history would be nice to maintain but practicality says its a no go.

Hmm.

Sounds good, but finding a suitable spot won't be easy. Big pressure in Bury over land use, house building etc.

A merger and return you would expect would yield a boost to attendances, which could be key to future development/promotion. 

Sticking with a jumpers for goalposts set up isn't likely to bring back league football any time soon. Meanwhile Gigg remains unused, and decaying.

Seems folk need their heads banging together.

Im not sure the AFC lot are that bothered about "League" football.

They seem very happy with what they are doing, fair play.

It's great whilst you are winning, they can't go beyond the Evo/NPL without having segregation, which Radders don't have. There's some proper clubs in that league. Also, if they end up in the same league, I can't imagine them being such great landlords.

PS that old bloke you mention, I remember going to Gigg Lane a few times in the 80s and 90s and he became a "steward" (well he had a flourescent jacket on while watching the game from the main stand, this was not a job like being in the away end for Utd v Leeds).  He looked well past it then so he's doing well if he's still around!

I’ve got Bury friends and colleagues who fall into this bracket - they are part of the AFC group, want the merger and are appalled at those opposing it negatively and giving them negative press as we heard over the weekend. 

These are the people I think of when a club/community/lifestyle which means so much to us all as football fans, is on the brink of being taken away.

I figured it out when Helen Chamberlain and Tim Lovejoy asked watchers of Soccer AM to consider going watching Bury at home where to entrance fee was a fiver for adults and a quid for kids. We spent half the game listening to them singing about only hating Bolton Wanderers. I say half a game, I think we fucked off at or just after half time.

Yes, well said.  I don't know any Bury fans but I worked with one many years ago, a great bloke, used to take his son and never had a bad word to say about Bolton.  Just another football fan.  I get that the town has a lot of Utd/City fans and so seen as not deserving a football club, but that's not dissimilar to most lower division clubs, it doesn't make those that do support these clubs any less deserving.

Seems to have been a thing about being a Bolton fan that when local rivals are so far below us in the pyramid that they're almost out of view, I start hoping they do well. Then eventually they start playing us again and we find out they hate us and I wonder why I bothered. Stockport are the prime recent example. However, it happened with Burnley, Wigan, Blackpool and others who popped up in the Prem after we'd got there. No doubt it'll happen with Oldham at some point. Bury? Very doubtful. But for a good few of their number, hating Bolton Wanderers will be their last big attachment to league football, be under no illusion. 

I'd still much rather much have Bury than Morecambe, Fleetwood and Accrington. But when we do get back to the Championship I hope we are strong enough not to struggle with Blackburn, Burnley, Blackpool, PNE and Wiggin. 

Lancastrian local rivalry is rich, internecine and packed with history. I despise losing to any of the above and glory in victories over them.

Good points well made.  Its fascinating to think about how many teams out of the 92 and beyond have been past or present "rivals".  Someone that started supporting us in the 50s probably never gave Stockport, Tranmere, Wigan or to a lesser extent Bury a 2nd thought for about 35 years, next minute they all hate us!  Then add the Morecambes and Fleetwoods of recent times and even Port Vale, etc.  It makes me wonder if any other clubs have collected so many rivalries (or haters) over the years.  Our geography in the middle of a hotbed of clubs, the fact that we aren't too big or small for these rivalries to be semi-realistic, our tendency to change divisions more often than most, and we must have the most so-called rivalries of any club surely.  Even throw in Doncaster and Peterboro for Gods sake!  Even Wolves and possibly Ipswich thanks to play off seasons.  No-one likes us, apart from Wycombe and Charlton.

Ultimately though, whilst there will be a few cases such as that old bloke, the vast majority of the town just don't give a fuck. They call Manchester "Town" and call Bury "Bury".  Fucking oddballs.  When questioned why they support either City or the Rags their justification was because Bury is in Manchester.  When the club folded far less people cared than should have done so.

I hope, for the sake of that old duffer alone, they do get football back at Gigg Lane, but the town as a whole really doesn't deserve it to ... and looking at the squabbling that is currently going on, it could well be that it never happens.  The old bloke will inevitably die before long (if he hasn't already done so) and I can go back to not being arsed again.

I looked at their forum - which is nothing but a Facebook group - prior to a game and do post a few of the more entertaining quotes from them. I find it funny (strange) they really do hate us when we don’t even see them as any kind of rival whatsoever.

I get emails from Morecambe FC on a fairly regular basis, because I joined their membership scheme from my weekend LA6 address a few years back in case I ever failed to get a ticket from BWFC.

So bury fc are protesting at the thought of merging with Afc? But all the while not actually having a club themselves or a team? Just a stadium? Is that the gist of this?

I know folk involved at AFC.

I understand that are pretty neutral about the merger.

FC need AFC more than AFC need FC.
