I doubt that they're trying to purposefully deceive the public. I think, they're inclined to think they need to dumb down some of their broadcasts so their overall message gets across to the widest populace. In doing so accuracy is lost. If they'd presented a much longer and more detailed presentation going through all the potential outcomes and influences on the numbers it would be better for people like you and me, who want to know the detail, but the message would lose impact for those who don't care. My issue is - I believe that there are folk, on both sides of the argument, who aren't honest, who want to used covid as a political battering ram for their preffered ideaology, or personal gain. Take Karol Sikora, for example. He has a massive conflict of interest, and he has a lot of baggage. He has supported issues in the past that some consider to put profit before patient wellbeing and he's been accused (by several reputable folk) of deception for personal gain. He might be genuine in his concern for cancer patients, however, he is also the Director of the largest group of private cancer treatment centres in the UK. The centres will be losing big £'s because of the lack of cancer refferals they are getting, due to the NHS prioritising covid. Before Covid, he was most notorious as a very active advocate of privatising parts of the NHS (unsuprisingly, expert specialist treatment centres!) and rallying against Obamacare in the US for the Republican Party - his method of attack was this: "I'm an expert - I'm just trying to help patients get better treatment" - when in reality he wants the governments to make specialist treatment privatised and leave the NHS for bog standard treatment - which might be great if you can afford it, not so god if you're poor and need specialist treatment. (the university he is linked to is a private one that has had courses he presided over withdrawn, for being pseudoscience, and Imperial college London took legal advice over him falsly claiming he'd been their professor of Oncology https://www.theguardian.com/science/2009/may/22/karol-sikora-honorary-professor-imperial-college) Therefore, when I read anything he posts regarding needing to end lockdown, I doubt his intergrity. Instead I think "Is he just saying this because he doesn't want his cancer centres to fail?, is his advice part of his overall want to break up the NHS, so that his private cancer teatment centres can flourish?, after all it looks like he's done stuff like this before." Is his real concern a personal one? and therefore not in the best interests of the population? In essence, I don't think he's an honest guy, nor an expert in epidemiology. on the other hand there are some good pieces that paint the picture a litle better than Karol, in my opinion, like this https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-rule-of-four-how-to-make-sense-of-covid-case-numbers Heneghan, again! wiggy
And totally agree on Peely’s assessment of Sikora and others. We 100% need eminent scientists to be examining the data and questioning everything that is happening. But on pretty much day 1 of the pandemic, Sikora basically came out and said this is all bollocks. It might have been but at that point there was simply no way he was basing his statements on any sort of scientific evidence.

That piece he's written in the spectator goes against what he said about Bolton's covid numbers last week - so bravo to him if he's realised the importance of using correct measurements when writing articles. Did he know he was talking shit when he used 15 day old hospitalisation data and not taking the lag between infection and hospitalisation into account when comparing against rising infection numbers, or was it a mistake? Imagine if whitty did the same. Edited September 26, 2020 by peelyfeet

Back to what I've said before; the majority of the population are following what the Govt decides, which seems to a high level of trust in the scientists behind them. Too immature to realise that he only gets one chance of a decent education. I think the bigger issue is Social Media. Back in the day people were more compliant because there was not this outlet that legitimises wacky views. I think most people now are following or trying to follow the rules. The Govt have said with the Cummings affair that there is a degree of interpretation. Some folk will take the piss and shout about so such behaviour seems more normal. I think my family follow the rules. But Step daughter runs a lashes business which can stay open. But it is from our house so we have a stream of people coming and going. They use a door straight into her studio and go nowhere else in the house. How must that look ? Yoof is 22 with a g/f who does not live with us. As Leeds is in lockdown now probably not meant to see her but given they have just been away together for a couple of days what is the increased risk ? LeggyMountbatten
Additional restrictions were brought into force when Bolton hit 120 cases per 100k people. 7 other GM areas are now over 120 but no extra restrictions have been put in place. I don’t get it. All these closed pubs and restaurants damaging the local economy in Bolton. There was fuck all here to start with, there’s going to be nowt left by the time this is over. Actually sounds more like a gritty police drama. Detective Ronnie Covid gets lumbered with rookie constable Dave Crabs, but despite being chalk and cheese they develop a mutual respect as the series progresses. Actually "chalk and cheese" could be the spinoff. Detective Dave Chalk gets lumbered with rookie constable Ronnie Cheese, but despite being oil and water they develop a mutual respect as the series progresses. Then the Yanks remake it and Chief of Police Dave Oil gets lumbered with rookie cop Eddie Water, but despite being apples and oranges they develop a mutual respect as the series progresses. The Swedes remake it as "Applen och Apelsiner" but make it much bleaker (Polisoverintendent Applen turns out the be the serial killer and is shot by Polisassistent Apelsiner by a foggy lake in some woods. In the dark.)
