Rotherham United (A)
Agree Charles should be starting. He missed a sitter & maybe a half chance plus created our goal . Not at his best but yes he does at least put himself about unlike Collins who struggles physically. Metette’s absence in a game against Rotherham is a real head stratcher . Schon & Morley were ok , Williams had a nightmare & should have been pulled at HT & Cogley in preference to Tutu as sub when chasing the game is unbelievable. My pet hate is still happening ie not covering the edge of our penalty area at corners.Their guy had oceans of space to hit the ball & a more accurate shot would have been another giveaway goal.

Transfer Gossip
Definitely a gamble bringing Randall in , he’s got talent but definitely isn’t going to put his foot in . Earlier this season watched Northampton v Peterborough on sky plus. Randall’s running from deep was outstanding , however they managed somehow to lose the game which they had totally dominated due to abysmal finishing . At the time I thought Peterborough were a worse version of us. Hope this comes off , expect him to start in place of Lolos.

Bet your a bundle of laughs on a night out.

Big Ruth
Going to away matches on Hargreaves supporters club coaches probably mid sixties Ruth was the dominant presence at all times , we even worked out that if you stood close but not too close to Ruth you might kop for a complimentary ticket. Course we were relative kids really fourteen/fifteen yrs old. She was pretty unflappable because away games were ,shall we say ,lively Having your coach bounced by Birminghams Zulu forerunners was a bit hairy ,if the old bill didn’t turn up when they did , the coach would have been on its side. Ruth must have seen it all both on & off the pitch unfortunately but she was a Wanderer through & through and was always Bolton Wanderers no.1 fan I’m sure the club will come up with a tribute. Rip Ruth.

Charlie Wright
Jimmy Armfield signed him from Charlton I think. He played in all matches season 71-72 & of course was in the 72-73 championship winning side .Barry Siddall deputising at the end of that season. Great goalkeeper & character who always reacted to the fans whether friendly or unfriendly. Sadly his managerial career was short-lived , but then again at the time (mid-eighties) the club was a sinking ship run by people who would not be out of place running a whelk stall. RIP Charlie, thanks for the memories.

Wycombe Wanderers (A)
One repeated failing regarding last nights excellent point was again defending the edge of our own penalty area from corners . It’s not rocket science ffs , get our biggest midget to patrol that area , we seem to leave it to chance a policy which has already cost us points this season ( & last) I think Jones was our worst defender last night , got away with a ridiculous push in the penalty area plus a wrestle with Kone that could with another ref seen a penalty given .He seems to have lost a yard.

Brand Evatt
Agree with most of this , to me he seems fragile & thin skinned . Not qualities that enhance football management.

Loan Watch 2024/25
Just watched Fleetwood v Accy .Khumbeni decent 90 minutes , deep midfield reads the game pretty well , always available for the ball , doesn’t panic & rattled off a couple of good through balls .Physicality not a problem either. Probably further on than Ahmed Sharples jsl.

The Managerial Roundabout
I agree watched them stuff Stockport 5-0 & they looked like the real deal , quick mobile target man who can hold the ball & score goals .Also grafting midfield with Morley probably their ‘luxury’ player .Solid at the back with the giant loanee Taylor much improved since his time with us . Injuries would impact them but they seem to find solutions when problems arise. fwiw I don’t think the current manager will leave them . I think they will go up .

Transfer Gossip
Watched the Cambridge v Shrewsbury highlights Dan the man scored a tap in also set one up , he seems to have bulked up , don’t know really if he’s improved but seemed up for the physical stuff ……..I was thinking about all our lightweights. Could he be a useful sub ? Is he worse or on a par with Victor? Or am I straw clutching big-time ? ps Katchunga played well .jsl.

Mansfield Town (H)
Surreal game that .Can’t for the life of me work out why our wingbacks played arse about face , Schon struggled with that concept & as an improving player was compromised by a weird ‘tactical’ decision. First half performance plus Vic’s miss turned our locality toxic (despite the miss I thought he did ok with absolutely zero support from either Collins or McAtee) I actually had the same thought as Mick Brown that Evatt was trying to get himself sacked. Can’t work out whether the subs were genius or more likely a last desperate roll of the dice . Anyway if we can win after playing shite for sixty minutes maybe there is hope . The question is will Evatt learn anything from tonight , especially the midfield two ?

Mansfield Town (H)
Have you forgotten the lost barren lands of the eighties ? 4.5k crowds watching kick & run footie ! Even those days weren’t the lowest point .We all know when that was.
-
Cambridge United (A)
That was pretty awful.Sloppy passing all over the park , not withstanding enabling them to get back in the game. The subs were catastrophic ruining any flow we had which wasn’t great but at least we had possession of the ball.Evatt went on about countering them in the last quarter by bringing on ‘more physical/ bigger ‘players .Really? Why not try to get a second goal against ten men? His post match interview was desperate & excuses inplausible . Looks like a guy who hasn’t got the wherewithal to get this team promoted unfortunately.

Stockport County (A)
Watched Stockport midweek taken apart by Wycombe who to be fair were the best team I have seen this season in this league Was a bit apprehensive about a positive reaction from them after the home stuffing . So it was one of those games where we needed to get on the front foot early in terms of their morale after being hammered . Very opposite approach cautious back peddling, under pressure from long balls & failure to get out of our own half with shitty two yard passing & no forward outlet. All predictable really & that’s the problem , reluctantly I think Evatt is now a busted flush . How any potential successor can succeed with these players I’m not sure but fresh thinking / tactics are required asap.
-
Stockport County (A)
Wycombe well worth their lead .Morley & Taylor playing well.Kone should already be on a hat-trick .He’s a very good outlet target much better than Vic imo. Stockport will no doubt save their best for Saturday though . That Whooten is a dirty shirt pulling donkey , over to you Rico.

Todays Games
To be fair wiggin are easily the better team.Blackpool are absoute gash.. up and under hoofball of the worst kind . Hope they rescue a draw though .Ramsey (I know) & that little shite Smith look decent for the pie-eaters.

New Poll - Evatt
I agree Evatt will be kept in post until the playoffs are unattainable. Also his potential successor will have to more or less dismantle the team which is not a quick process . Personally I would snatch off any hand that offered the last place playoff position.Even that scenario is going to have to see a substantial improvement in performances & results.

Birmingham City (A)
Manager sets the tone. Charles can’t really play up top on his own especially with shite service. Arfield is a mystery inclusion , offers hardly anything to the team. Obvious improvement second half with positive changes. McAtee should score one of his chances. Didn’t understand the Forrester sub , thought Williams & Cogley did ok & the ref was more than happy to give the penalty even though the ball had been delivered? Birmingham were much better than us & we actually defended ok but you have to play with some intensity when your behind , that is almost always missing from our play in that scenario. Thought Johnston & Cogley played well .
-
Burton Albion (H)
A word of praise for Williams , his quick thinking & long throw won us the game really plus his well taken goal .Can’t understand why we went back to three up front though , they just get in each others way plus we are left light in midfield. Thommason rumour is a hamstring so Mattete needs to start Tues with Sheehan & Dempsey , Vic & Charles up top .If Toal is still out surely we need to employ a back four ? Isn’t going to happen though is it. ps. Santos back on it given the defensive line-up.

FA Cup First Round Draw
First game of the new millennium, absolute shite .Ricketts got both goals for them. There were a lot of disgruntled whites that day including me but heyho things definitely got better.

Bolton V Aston Villa U21 (H)
Plenty ups & downs during my era of support (1963 onwards) Never really lost the faith even in the dark eighties when we used to debate in the snooker club pre match wether or not to ditch the match & have a couple of extra frames instead .We never actually did the deed , but we missed a few kick-offs.Going through the turnstile at 3.05 to be told by the operator that we were ‘one down , Tony Kelly own goal ! My lifelong radar is not telling me that we are a promotion team & to be fair didn’t last season either .That inner buzz that you feel when you KNOW your going up is absent unlike the Armfied & Todd seasons. Although tbf the eventual Greaves promotion season had me as a doubting Thomas. Nevertheless we still live in hope although as much as Evatt has progressed the club I don’t think he can take us up and I hope I’m wrong. Despite all never felt like I wasn’t up for the match , although folk who travel the breadth & length of the country have my unreserved respect.

Bolton V Aston Villa U21 (H)
Hopefully no injuries & that’s really my only concern . What a shitpot of a competition. Anyone stressing over this needs help.
-
Shrewsbury Town (H)
Statistically we are one point behind where we where last season after the same number of games .jsl.
-
Northampton Town (A)
Pipped us to promotion back to Div 1 1965 I think .We had games in hand but blew it .Seem to remember drawing with Charlton & Swindon at home in the run-in .Didn’t get anywhere near to promotion to the top league until the late seventies after that . Northampton finished second & Newcastle won it (obviously no playoffs then) Some things never change !

Crawley Town (A)
Two goals to the good , clean sheet , despite only 30% possession we could have scored five. Whats not to like.
