Blondi
Hello! I'm changing my beloved Alfa Romeo Giulietta which I've owned for 5 years and its been a belter! I am torn between a Skoda Octavia VRS and a Mercedes C Class 300, I am willing to spend around 19/20K on a car, the Skoda and Mercedes are pretty similar in prices for the same year and mileage. There isn't much difference in performance and economy, I think the Mercedes is slightly quicker on acceleration, both cars are around 250BHP, which is plenty for me. I only drive automatic and petrol cars these days, I do less than 5K mileage a year, but I really need a car that is comfortable for my parents who are both 83 now and them getting in and out of my Alfa is a little problematic . I just wanted to see what you guys thought and which car you would go for? Site Supporter Spider Posted April 15 Site Supporter Share Posted April 15 Merc Skoda are decent these days but the quality of a Merc on the inside is a so much better. And that’s what really matters. Plus the Merc will hold its value better.
Site Supporter only1swanny Posted April 15 Site Supporter Share Posted April 15 The Mercedes will be much better quality, better finish and more plush. As a recovery driver, i'd average 2/3 Mercedes a day on about 8/9 total jobs. Had about 3 skodas that were not rtcs. I'd go for the fake VW if it were me. Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted April 15 Site Supporter Share Posted April 15 Cost of repairs, servicing, and insurance to consider too. If you can afford both, then no problems. Personally, with such a low mileage, I'd have an electric car- loads of second hand ones, with all the running cost benefits available. Just read an article about oil prices, which have been and are likely to inch upwards, so expect petrol to follow. However, given your choice- I'd have the skoda. frank_spencer
Practical wise the Skoda especially with it being the vrs making it a fun drive. The Merc will be swankier and have the kudos
MancWanderer
If the comfort for the parents is a big issue I’d go Merc every day Such a low mileage I’d certainly consider electric or hybrid at the very least

Her parents have a b class merc, and it is obviously good, but is a much firmer ride than the older one.
Site Supporter Winchester White Posted April 15 Site Supporter Share Posted April 15 I am not sure the AMG line or VRS will be particularly soft riding for your folks tbh but might be fine if you avoid the plethora of potholes these days. The Merc looks nicer inside and out but the Skoda seems to have a good reputation for reliability.

Did you work at Brands Hatch?

That's what a lot of these companies have to do, constantly stacked up with the ones that the clubs didn't or couldn't do. Nothing as stressful as a Mercedes that's stuck in gear, where you aren't allowed to put hooks on as the wishbones are as thick as your thumb! Only driven Skodas a couple of times but those seats are hard

Is that because there are many more Mercs around than Skoda's? Just looked at reliability and the Skoda seems so much more reliable than the C class, which concerns me. The skoda is tried and tested VAG but used to get a lot of Audis.. the merc are plush as and gorgeous cars though, get a warranty and it will be reet. Then had a Passat for 5 years and never missed a beat. Now on a Cupra PHEV and it is great. Missus has has an Audi for 8 years and been fine, moving to a Golf next. You never know if you will get a "Friday afternoon" car but for me VW group cars have never lete down.
batton carrier
Don't know about mercs but cost of repairs on vag cars has seemingly gone mental. Most of my experience has been with diesels which have had loads of niggles . Eml light seems to be a perm fixture. Screens have gone on infotainment system on a golf and a transporter van both less than 5 yrs old. Dsg box went on golf at around 90k .I don't think they are as well put together these days. Just make sure you get a decent warranty that covers everything.I do like the look of those vrs Skoda's though.
kent_white
I had a Skoda for years and would swear by it. It depends if your a ponce. In which case, go for the Merc 😁

Underpants
My Ford Focus Cmax gets me to the shops, work and the seaside. A car is a car. I can't see this fascination that some people have with cars.
Whitestar
Just get a bigger Alfa, if you're happy with them (a lot of people are) then nothing else comes close for looks or style. And you would get a stunning Giulia for 20k
