The easy thing for keyboard managers questioning southgate after serbia is they can never be wrong

Shouldve done this, then this, but not that and then do this, that, the other

We may have lost if he had done those things, but fortunately for them, we will never know

All we know is that England won and all these experts dont work anywhere near the top end of football

Maybe says a lot

It's a forum.

That is the point.

Folk don't have to agree, but this "slap down" mentality of any criticism is every bit as extreme as the over the top comments that become personal.

You are right that we may have lost with a different approach, we may also have been better with a greater victory- no one knows.

What we do know is that it was an uninspiring performance, but I'm of the view that Bolty detailed- winners frequently are slow starters who improve-  and we should simply get behind the team at the next game. Then all discuss it with our various views afterwards.

Some fucking bizarre takes about why Foden was so shite. Blaming the system, the fullback and even Bellingham:D

He's a top quality player it's on him to turn up at internationals and make something happen. Much lesser players have managed to do it lol

We aren't far off asking UEFA to let us play Rodri and let Pep in the dressing room to do his own 1 to 1 coaching.

Here here. I find the "we won - nothing to discuss" view really weird, on a football forum 😂

To get back to discussion, one thing I don't think has been mentioned, is we need to be willing to sub Kane at times. He's our best striker but those Serbians had him well marked and I'd have brought on Watkins to give them a different challenge after 55mins. And saved Kane for the next match.

In game management has always been the bit Southgate seems weakest at though. He definitely has built a really good team spirit around the England squad, way better than anything I've seen for a long time. The in game stuff seems to catch us out against the better teams though.

We simply didn't play to Kane's strengths.

Crosses, through balls etc and he gets goals.

He can hold it up, but not if it's high and there are big lads battling with him for a header.

It was good that we mixed it up with some longer balls, but that requires quick support for whoever is the initial target.

Personally, I would have minded seeing Tony come on when we were struggling to get out.

His pace would have been invaluable for balls over the top, and he is also decent in the air.

Has lead the line for Brentford well.

If we win the next game, I think we're pretty much through, so we might see others given a go. Though it wouldn't surprise me if we didn't.

and we might as well

stick with it for the next two games and work out how to get the best out of everyone and not just JB

but we can't have games generally passing players like Foden and Kane by in the KO rounds - they need to be firing on all cylinders by then

hopefully it's a case of starting slowly and finding our stride as the tournament progresses

Haha, You'd not think he was the player of the season with 6 Premier league titles and a treble under his belt with the way they're talking.

You have to keep the shape the same or the players won’t know where they are. It’s not like a club team where they’re together every week and Foden will start to find how to deal with it as the tournament goes on but we certainly need to keep the pace up in the way we started the last game instead of dropping off.

So you're the one who places store in the ranking system? I wondered who it was.

Nope, it's based on the Elo chess ranking model which basically means not losing to the higher ranked sides and cuffing lower ranked sides to stay at the top. Since beating Germany by the odd goal over a year ago Belgium haven't played anyone in the top ten apart from a 2 - 2 draw with us so they've maintained their position via a steady stream of wins against lower and mid-ranked teams including Estonia and Azerbaijan. Makes them difficult to overtake in the rankings but is no indication of the current side, current form, emerging talent etc. Same with England.

My comment was as much an indictment of the ranking system as anything else - just pointing out that 48th beat 3rd which demonstrates how useless it is as a prediction guide - despite some gamblers using it to throw their money down the pan.

aye, they are above Italy and Spain who have "recently" won the Euros and Nations League

and the following all got more points than them in qualifying:

Spain
Denmark
Slovenia
Romania
Portugal

and funnily enough, Slovakia

Yeh, thought there would be. Think it was Cundy off talk sport I heard earlier say the same thing as you’re suggesting.

I was just surprised that every opinion I heard within 12 hours of the game finishing was very pro TAA and having two 6’s should continue to be the way forward without one of them being Bellingham.

I suppose the take away point from this is that it’s not clear-cut, there isn’t one team/system/selection that’s the obvious one that should be used or changed and we shouldn’t be surprised if TAA continues to be used there.

And before anyone posts the article naming the Wanderers fan, leave it until charges are proved eh?

Not even been charged yet either.

Absolute joke they can print people's names when there's no evidence been shown or charges made.

I don't think there is any danger of the shape changing, the players may, but we'll be sticking with this shape/system I would have thought.

There does seem to have been a massive over reaction to Sundays game though.

Did we win? - Yes

Did we play well? - Not really (apart from the first 20 minutes or so)

Were we lucky to win? - I don't think so, they never really troubled us, apart from a single shot form distance.

Are we still in the tournament, and top of the group after 1 game? - Yes

Nobody wins the tournament after the first game, we had a job to do on Sunday, and that was to win, which we did.

I believe we will improve, but lets be honest, some fans can't wait to jump all over Southgate if we're not playing well. They'll be in a right quandry if we do actually go on to win the tournament (which I personally don't think we're anywhere near good enough to, but I am hoping to be proven wrong)

There are issues with this "naming" of folk throughout the whole system.

Folk found not guilty of serious crimes, then have their futures negatively impacted, despite being cleared.
