Overall, we have won the games you would expect us to win, and lose the games thats its not a surprise to lose.

So we are yet to beat a proper top team in a knockout game away from Wembley, that's fairly damning.   And yes its so difficult to fail to qualify now that we are a top seed, I can remember us having Italy at least twice in our qualifying group (1978 and then under Hoddle).  Germany have been in our group twice IIRC

Also the famous one under Graham Taylor v Holland - no chance they'd be in our qualifying group now.  At Euro 92, when Sweden put us out, there were only 8 teams and our group contained France, Denmark and the hosts Sweden, not an easy game amongst them.  Difficult to compare eras now that its so easy to qualify not only for the tournaments but also for the knockout stages.  With the odd exception (our Iceland defeat etc), I don't see any improvement, as you say we still lose when it gets to the tougher games and we still do just enough against the rest.

Again, if success is getting to semi finals and finals, then yes of course.

As of losing that final against Italy though, the team hasn't gone on, and the football has got worse. 

Instead of developing, it's become increasingly negative.

I was talking about away from Wembley, we've beaten a few at home over the decades.

It was great to beat Holland and they are a decent team but IMO we're kidding ourselves if we put them up there with the usual standard of Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, France, Brazil, Argentina.
