Wanderlust Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Interesting wishlist I think that the current lightweight squad will be a challenge for some, and if they go with a similar set up to the one they’ve been recruited for it won’t play well with a section of the fans. If they have a budget for what’s left of the transfer window and a few decent contacts it would help - our defence needs sorting out and we need to be more ruthless in general especially up top. A good organiser and tactician may well get a tune out of this lot ideally with a couple of relevant acquisitions. For me, I’d love Gary O’Neill as he could probably put his boots on and improve us even now, or Dyche who would definitely sort it out but neither are likely so we’ll see what happens. Thought Schumacher got a rough deal at Stoke and was doing OK but even though he’s amongst the bookies favourites I’m not overly keen but I’ll keep an open mind for whoever gets the job. Quote
mickbrown Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Totally forgot that Dion Dublin was in the hotel bar pre-match last night. Coincidence? 😂 Quote
thebells Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Seem to recall Iles previously saying people like Lowe and Schumacher wouldn't be on the radar. Take what he says with a pinch of salt by all means, but I don't sense they are on the list (no sure how or who he'd get this info from - was a month or so back) Dyche would be a surprise. Our squad doesn't fit his brand, and he's getting to the stage where he'll be a short term fix. Expect the club will be looking for a long term, career type manager like Evatt is / was. Would think they're looking at someone like Mat Sadler at Walsall or similar as opposed to many of the names mentioned! Quote
Ani Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I think the players have got away lightly in last few weeks. There are plenty of stories about slacking off in training and general lack of professionalism which is why I think an older tougher head is needed. Hopefully someone comes in with time to get a couple in and others out in the window. Quote

Worry about the possession tippy tappy bollocks with better players on a higher budget in a league above. Paul Warne will be available soon! Quote

mickbrown Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I always quite like this period of time. It’s all quite exciting but bar Rioch, Lennon and Coyle (yes I know!!) I’ve always been massively underwhelmed by any appointment. Even Big Sam was a disappointment at the time Quote

Didledee Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Better late than never (should have been after Oxford) but it seems a bit too late this, season isn't over of course but it's the 22nd, we still need better players, these lot have shown they are bottlers and ain't good enough to match expectations atm. Look at Utd they sack ETH and whilst they have had some good results at difficult grounds under Amorim the squad isn't good enough and are still dropping points for fun, so whilst a new manager may improve us with these players I'm not sure we can expect what we hope for. if a new manager comes in quite sharply, does he get to bring in players? would he have wanted to have kept Charles? would he have wanted Randall and Murphy?, what would winning against Cambridge and Charlton have proved to override how poor 2024 and the start of 2025 have been? just seems like this should have been done way sooner, but glad we now at least have made change, and who knows perhaps these players can perform way better with new ideas/tactics etc. Quote

Happy to admit I'd have potted him halfway through the game at Walsall though. I'm not doing my manager-spotting credentials any good today. ... just to get it out of the way, I was also chuffed George Mulhall was coming back, but in my defence I was too young to know better. Happy with both Lennon and Coyle (at the time) and Neal, Parky & Evatt.. Unhappy with Freedman & Hill Sam, I genuinely wanted as I thought he'd done well at Blackpool and was doing a great job at Notts County. Megson could and still can fook right off! Quote
Site Supporter HomerJay Posted January 22 Site Supporter Posted January 22 managers at this level are all much of a much imo. sometimes they click, sometimes they dont. there will alwasy be bad runs. i would have kept him to the end of the season, but it was turning into a megson situation, and i aint turning up to witness that again. its not fun for anyone. him leaving was the only option, i just hope it doesnt put us back 2 years. we need promotion now! our/his issue is not tappy tappy (also many simpletons think it was), its not being able to to basics of defending, and those league 1 defenders doing tippy tappy at the wrong time. tippy tappy is football in 2025 im afraid, get used to it. but yes, theres a time and place. last night he played all the footballers, and they did the tippy tappy really well i thought. new role for randall, but i thought that had a future... then the defence decide defending was a shit idea, so lets not bother. for me his biggest issue was not investing in defenders that could do what he wants. (though this new lad on loan could be that option.... ) johnstone - clogger santos - big clogger forrester - league 2 player jones - average at best toal is the only quality, and without him fuck all improves, no matter who the manager is. Quoting you in this thread rather than Evatt, as this is about our new manager. Getting the it’s a debate and we all have a valid opinion out of the way… We can’t be starting off with a new manager, with folk dismissing, criticising, writing off and looking for all the negatives from day one! Surely O’Neill was getting things right keeping Bournemouth then Wolves in the premier league? And let’s repeat premier league. There were times I looked at those sides, the way they were playing and some of the results they were getting and dreaming of us being in that position. I’m going to be arguing with a few if we get trotted out all the reasons we shouldn’t appoint somebody. EVERYBODY we can appoint will have games/tenures/periods of time they haven’t looked great managers - that’s why they’ll be available to Bolton. Whoever it is will get my backing, whatever their career pathway was before here. And whatever negative history there is, should be put to one side as they aim to get this side promoted out of L1. BWFC_LOVE Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Underwhelmed:- Lee: Probably the most attractive time for any potential manager to come in. Hoped he would stick to our basics, but decided to completely rip that up and tried playing 4-4-2 with a load of random signings Megson: Doomed to fail Hill: A Bolton red ffs Thought we were massive getting Freedman and Lennon in. Freedman looked to be going places, and him severing ties with Palace having been a club legend over two spells as a player was huge. I was surprised we managed to get Lennon in, yet stuck what I could on him at 25/1 a week or so before he was announced. Just had a feeling. Feel like he could’ve held on for a Premier League job at the time. Quote

frank_spencer Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Can only think of a couple I wouldn't want Darren Ferguson and Ian Holloway (not sure if he's even interested in being a manager anymore) mainly. By the same token can't think of anyone I want there's obviously the ex player bias towards folk like Gary O'Neil. Quote
royal white Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Not much mention of Keane or Dean Holden. Both worth a punt 👀 Quote
