We needed to stop the rot after that defeat and a good run did follow. However there were further phases of the season when we had similar dodgy spells. I guess that's the difference between finishing top like Wolves or scraping in to third on the last day like we did! After the Hartlepool home defeat i was feeling pretty down and the week later was on holiday in lakes with my girlfriend of the time . It pissed down the whole week and felt very miserable with that and the football. Slight relief was finding a nice lakes pub near where we were staying which was very busy and ended up sharing a table with a couple of lads who were on walking holiday. Got on really well and eventually the chat turned to football so I started to cheer up. Turned out they were fucking Hartlepool fans. But never beat us at theirs!
Duck Egg
I was at that Darlington game. I think it was Peter Barnes first match after joining us on loan for his first spell with us. There was a genuine buzz amongst the travelling Wanderers that we'd signed a star but that soon turned to disappointment when he miscontrolled his first 2 or 3 touches and spent the whole game out wide watching the game pass him by. It was a miserable day, we played poorly, conceded a late goal (I'd forgotten how late) and my mate got bit off a Police dog.

At full time we'd won only one more game than we'd lost and it just didn't feel like we were going to mount a serious promotion push. Had Mick Brown been drafted in as assistant by this point? , I always think he gets overlooked in the eventual improvement under Neal's reign

He definitely brought some much needed experience and stability. Colin Irwin was definitely made the fall guy for our relegation to Div 4. paulhanley
Back to posting the 1987/88 games in sequence. We're now up to Saturday, October 17. Bolton had lost the previous Saturday at Darlington which meant three defeats in four games and an unconvincing record of W 5 D 2 L 4 . Any thoughts of a clear march to promotion were evaporating. Up next at Burnden were Carlisle United - already struggling and doomed to finish close to the foot of the table. It was the right fixture at the right time for the whites. A 5-0 win was a real nerve settler. Youngsters Julian Darby and Nicky Brookman got themselves on to the scoresheet - but new signing Peter Barnes injured himself in literally the first few seconds of the game. I'd posted this one on You Tube a while ago so some of you may have seen it before. The following midweek saw another home fixture against Exeter and I'll try to post that up at the weekend. Cheers Paul , a much welcome and needed Win in this one , Nicky Brookman played a Blinder here and Dave had certainly taken to him . Peter Barnes must have been the quickest injury from Kick off I have ever seen , did he play anymore games for us in this season ?.

It was an abortive attempt to replace Jeff Chandler and we signed Stuart Storer shortly after. Chandler would have made a real difference that Autumn

I suspect you're right there. No academy system or constant stream of sensible advice for kids in the late 1980s. He certainly had something. The cockiness that probably led in to poor discipline also seemed to be part of what made him a good un on the pitch. Never harnessed.
