Had he not just had swimming the lesson before maths?

He was a very good swimmer and was in the pool every morning

I was an early morning swimmer and had some special shampoo I used before the normal stuff which got rid of the chlorine apparently.

I will have to ask my old school friends if I smelt of chlorine now.

Or alternatively, it's a mild spell of weather.

50 years ago today the big freeze led to 29 of the 32 ties being postponed.

The only matches played were at Preston, Tranmere and Plymouth.

By the time the fourth round was due only one match could be played as only 7 of the third round ties had been resolved.

Bolton stayed in the competition until 6 March - when their third round match at Bramall Lane eventually took place.

There was frost - often severe - every night from Boxing Day until 10th March (and plenty snow).

The last fourth round match (other than replays) did not take place until 16th March (at Middlesbrough).

The fifth round was put back 4 weeks - until 16th March, with the last 2 ties on 19th/25th March. Luckily, there were no draws.

The sixth round was put back 3 weeks to 30th March (the originally planned semi-finals date).

The semis were held on 27th April and the final was put back 3 weeks to 25th May.

I'm glad my house isn't made from straw this evening.

How come the weather people are getting the forecasting right at the moment?

Wind and rain are relatively easy to predict - snow here is more of a problem to predict in detail as we are an island on the edge of a continent. See below from t'intenet:

  • The UK can be affected by a variety of air masses. If we get contrasting air masses over the UK in the winter we can often end up with a 'battle ground' situation. This often occurs when cold dry continental air from the north or east bumps into relatively mild moist maritime air from the south or west. Where these air masses meet snow is possible, but a lot depends on which air mass wins the battle.

When battle ground situations occur, in one location it can be snowing but just 20 miles down the road it can be sleeting or even raining. This is because there is a fine line between the boundary of the warm and cold air.
