I'm still on one of those scuttery prepayment meters since we moved and we are putting 20 quid of gas on every 3 days. Sooner we fuck it off the better! Quote

stevieb Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 twenty fucking quid? I don't spend that a month! 160 a month plus 40 for electric. Fucking mental I tell thee. How proper scutters keep their kids warm at these rates I don't know. It was alright when we moved in summer, fuck all was going on each month as the Horwich riviera provided all the heat we needed. We need to get back to a dd were you don't feel the peaks and troughs as much. It's depressing! The perils of having a large(ish) old house with high ceilings I suppose. Fucking twats! Quote

Andydee Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 That foggy can't see end of the garden. Was looking forward to a nice long walk out this afternoon finishing off in an accommodating hostelry, looks like we're going to have to sack the long walk off! Quote
Youri McAnespie Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 (edited) I'm sure Barry has mentioned those pre-payment meters have negligible difference in tariff than direct billing, I remain convinced you pay more, I haven't got one, I know folk who have, they're not (too) scuttery, it was in their house when they moved in, the perils of living in South Bradshaw (aka Hal'ith Wood)... I've had an all electric (heating and shower wise, cooking still on gas) winter this year, after previous winter bills using the boiler have been absolutely ridiculous, then, to add insult to injury, they'd been underestimating - landing me with a four figure bill to pay off in the f*cking summer too...So when the boiler did it's usual annual pre-winter conk-out (it's not decrepit, eight years old, don't ever fit Ravenheat boilers -they're shite) - I bought in a half dozen Halogen heaters. My bills this winter using mainly electric (which is easy enough to do, being a (non molly-coddled ) bloke living alone) will, if my estimation using meter readings are right, should be around £600-£700 - which translates as a near 70-60% reduction from previous years... I might add, before I add to the mythos of me being a survivalist/near-tramp I'm not huddled around an electric fire in the living room, the downstairs is a shell atm until work starts again in spring, my 'living' area is upstairs, and my pied-a-terre , 'The Tramp's Nest', is all electric - so no choice... stevieb Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 It might be the same rates as dd but you spread the cost of winter over the summer months. If we stick with prepayment we'll probably drop to 30 a month gas just whacking hot water on when we need it. Quote

If we stick with prepayment we'll probably drop to 30 a month gas just whacking hot water on when we need it. Don't let them hoodwink you into fitting a 'smart' meter, they'll adjust your DD at will according to the readings that get sent remotely - you'll end up in exactly the same situation as having a pre-payment meter, paying shitloads during the winter and f*ck all during summer. They can't make you have a smart meter by law, yet. It's fucking bollocks, what was wrong in trusting folk to pay quarterly and having the meter read by a bloke once a year or so? Anyhow, I this sounds too good to be true, but after I get my (E-on and British Gas) quarterly bills and settle up, I'm toying with the idea of switching to these... http://switch.which.co.uk/energy-suppliers/ebico.html Unless they insist on a smart meter, in which case they can get ter fuck, (I don't know why this is underlined btw).
