How's it work with the 6 groups then?

Is it top 2 through to last 16 plus four best third place teams?

Or top of group plus two best second through to last 8?

Malc???????????????????

Basically you have to try very hard not to get eliminated in the group stage!

Sorry - I've been watching the Euro CCs since 9.30 this morning, and just catching up now.

16 of the 24 go through to the knock-out stages, first 2 in each group plus "best 4" third-placers.

Obviously points in the group is the first separating factor, followed by goal difference.

If the tie is still unbroken it next goes on goals scored. Then the fun starts.

Fair play comes in, scoring 1 for a yellow, 3 for a straight red, (but 2 for 2 yellows and 4 for a yellow followed by a straight red).

And if all that fails then the UEFA National ranking decides.

There is an obvious advantage in being in the last group to complete (which is E). So when RoIreland play their last match they will be capable of knowing exactly what they need to achieve.

Another thing is that in the first knock-out round  4 of the group winners will meet third-placers and 2 will meet runners-up.

And the other 4 runners-up will meet in the other 2 matches. So there is an unevenness between groups.

Top 3 out of 4!! What a load of diluted toss.

It's worse than that. The third placer in whichever proves to be the tightest group are less than likely to qualify.

For example if Germany win all 3  matches, and the matches between Ukraine / Poland / Nor'n Ireland are all drawn then third place will have 2 pts.

Note for knock-out fixtures:

If Wales (or England) finish third in Group B and qualify:

90% chance of playing winners of Group C (probably Germany) in Lille on 26 June, and

10% chance of playing winners of Group D (probably Spain) in in Lens on 25 June.

If Northern Ireland finish third in Group C and qualify:

90% chance of playing winners of Group A (probably France) in Lyon on 26 June, and

10% chance of playing winners of Group B (probably England) in Paris on 25 June.

If Republic of Ireland finish third in Group E and qualify:

70% chance of playing winners of Group D (probably Spain) in Lens on 25 June, and

30% chance of playing winners of Group A (probably France) in Lyon on 26 June.

If England (or Wales) win Group B they next play a third placed team in Paris on 25 June.

There is a 7/15 chance that this will be from Group A and the same from Group D, and a 1/15 chance from Group C.

If England (or Wales) finish as runners-up in Group they next play the runners-up from Group F (Portugal / Austria / Hungary / Iceland) in Nice on 27 June.

Fuck me

It's easier trying to work out the NFL play offs

What a farce.

To put it more directly:

The Winner of B plays third in A, (so long as third in A qualifies) unless thirds in both C and D also qualify.

Otherwise the Winner of B plays third in D, unless neither third in A nor third in D qualify, in which case Winner of B meets third in C.

Every Welsher who has called in to either 5 live or talksport, has been pontificating how they are a better side and will beat England on the basis of not losing to Belgium. Those fuckers are gonna be deflated big time. 3-0 or 4-1 to England.
