Wanderlust Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Just found this about Onomah: Ex-Preston North End midfielder Josh Onomah is being eyed by Championship clubs, after a full year out of the game. The Lilywhites signed the former Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa man on a short-term deal in January 2023. He played 13 games for Ryan Lowe’s side in the second half of that season, providing one assist. The expectation was that Onomah would then put pen-to-paper on a longer stay at Deepdale. However, his contract saga rumbled on all summer and Preston pulled the offer in late June - after complications finalising the deal. No resolution could be found and with pre-season due to start, North End moved on to other targetsAt the time, Lowe said: “We offered Josh a contract about a week before the season finished and we were in negotiations with Josh and his representatives. Josh’s contract terms were agreed, but there’s been a lot of complications with the deal regarding if and when he could sign, which was out of our control. Unfortunately we’ve had to move on to other targets because we just couldn’t wait any longer.” Onomah then had a trial at Stoke City and looked set to sign for the Potters, during Alex Neil’s tenure there. But, the offer put to him was deemed unsuitable and nothing got sorted. Bolton Wanderers were then linked with a move in January of this year. Onomah, though, remained a free agent for the entire 2023/24 season - keeping fit and waiting for the next opportunity. The midfielder started his career at Tottenham Hotspur and made a total of 32 first team appearances. He had loan spells at Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday, before a permanent move to Fulham in 2019. He scored five goals in 76 games for the Cottagers. Quote

Yes he was a good player but his career has been blighted with injuries and "fitness issues" and I don't think he played last season - basically disappeared after he was released by Preston - so I'm wondering if he's trying to make a comeback and has had a trial? Not quite a Jardel situation - and if he's anything like the player he was he'd be great for us in midfield. Should be in the prime of his career now but I've no idea where he's been or what he's up to - and then a rumour that we were interested popped up out of the blue on t'internet. Interesting though. Very un-Evatt like. He got bitten by the Maverick king of tattoos, I don't see him adding another one. Quote
gonzo Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Cab he juggle chainsaws and karate chop a stack of 18mm thick MDF off cuts though? Quote

So why would you let them go into the last year of their contract and not protect your asset?? Imagine the uproar if they all fucked off on a free, doesn't seem to fit with the moneyball ethos at all. Seems odd to me given some of the new contracts previously given out. Quote

Despite a trial with Stoke, he wasn't picked up and I get the impression that he or his agent think he should be paid gazillions so has talked himself out of a contract on more than one occasion - but a year on the sidelines earning fuck all may have sobered him up a bit. At 27 it's clear he hasn't fulfilled his potential and if he is ever going to do that he needs to be playing, so maybe he's come to his senses, realised that there isn't a queue of clubs outside his door desperate to sign him and has decided to be sensible about it? Or maybe the rumour is bollocks. Quote

He surely must have somet lined up, could be one of couple that evatt has stated he's hopeful of this week. A lwb and a centre mid and that wouldn't be far away unless there are outgoings vic, jones, dan who else would you think meh ,they can go. Quote

paulhanley Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 I'd say we need * RWB unless he intends using Jones there in competition with JDC * LWB * 2x centre mid. One of them the "midfield bastard" oft mentioned on here who actually just needs to be a midfielder with some height, physique and ability to put his foot in. It may even be that the signing of Forino means he thinks he can play Johnston or even Santos in that defensive midfielder role. Nixon reckons he has some Bolton news tomorrow. Quote

I’m convinced Santos will be off this summer, if only for the fact that I think it’s our last chance of making a half decent profit on him. It won’t be what it could have been, had we gone up (to be fair he’d have probably stayed in that scenario) but he’s 29 now and only has 1 year left on his contract. Otherwise you run the risk of either not signing a new contract and he walks for free next summer, or he does sign for another year or two but he’s then 30+ and less attractive. I might be completely wrong, it’s purely guesswork based on the business side of things, but with the new lad coming in as well and looking very much like a ready made Santos replacement (we’re not exactly struggling for centre backs) I just think it makes sense. I was thinking that might be what's behind the CJ Egan-Riley rumour because he's young, versatile with a good pedigree - and Evatt likes "versatile". Also heard Lolos has played DM which seems a bit far-fetched to me. The "nob head from Falkirk" has just been snapped up by newly promoted Mansfield - so much for the Socceroos coach chat about playing at this level would threaten his international spot. Quote

He might come out and sign a 3 year deal with us and we just accept that his value to us is playing the next 3 years instead of improving the accounts. Same money, 3 year deal, shot at the championship and a nice signing on fee might be attractive though. Who knows, time will tell - I do find the cb signing a strange one though with Johnston, Santos, Toal and Forester all more than capable starters, and that’s without considering Jones and Iredale. TrickyTrotter Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Agree we want to protect our assets, but any player signing a new contract will want a pay rise to sign, doubt they will sign up for the same, increasing the existing wage bill again this year when we are trying to add more to the squad. It's a balance and I think the Board want them to prove their worth now. If we get promoted Sheehan, Santos and Baxter will be only to happy to sign up again with us. If not their time is up anyway.
