Agree on the financial services point to a degree. Leeds is based heavily on traditional banking (including call centre) whereas as London is very much Corporate Finance.
I doubt this is anywhere in the country that highlights the difference between getting it right (Leeds) and wrong (Bradford). When I moved over here the actual cities were not that much different. Bradford is now one of the most depressing places I know, based very much on years of good memories compared to the current.
Be amazed if city of culture makes much difference.
I thought Liverpool was doing ok but that is based on a weekend visit pre pandemic. W63 seems to say Sheffield doing OK but again no real view on that.

Leeds and Bradford

Manchester and Bolton

The similarities are all there.

People like Cliff Morris drove Bolton into an absolute quarry of shit. Wouldn’t be surprised if Bradford had someone similar taking the piss.

Bradford has a familiar story to many northern towns, no industry to speak of anymore, a larger and more successful neighbour. Although I wouldn't say thay are a bad example, the council in the last few years has really done some amazing work in sealing a rift between some of the communtities (which was down to poverty as well) and its a lesson a town like Bolton could learn from in terms of starting to get their house in order.

In light of not having the economic advantages of Leeds, they are starting at a much lower base, and one of the key points of the straetgy is to inverst in culture and also attract cultural start ups as the rents are lower than in Manchester or Leeds and so you can get bigger studio space. This brings/keeps younger generations in the town (well, that's the long term plan) its something that's happened in Folkestone and Margate and the benefits (although not perfect) are starting to work both in terms of regeneration and economic growth. The council and msueum and cultural sector work very closely. The work they did over covid for older peole, poorer communites was exceptional which lead them to shortlisted for MoTY and now a step on to CoC, which isn't just about bringing people to the city, but also growth from within. Hull has benefitted hugely, and I believe, given the support of the council and their forsight, that Bradford hopefully will do the same.

They can't compete with Leeds, but they can create a different offer, which they are on the road to do. As I say, large outling towns near a mjaor city in the North could well benefit from their longer term strategic thinking.

who would be your choice for PM?

Truss or Hunt.

Truss is easily mocked but she has been preparing for a very long time. You may not remember when Thatcher was elected leader in 1975. She had the temerity to takr Heath on, while all the leading contenders waited to enter the contest at the second round. Truss's journey from left (daughter of a Communist Maths professor father and a mother who took her to Greenham Common demos, through LibDem at Oxford (at my old college), to Con when working for Shell. Her story, correctly told, will work better in the North than any other candidate's would.

Hunt apparently refused a (demotion) post under Bojo, so has stood aside from the circus. It seemed inconceivable that someone so hated by NHS staff could ever get the top job, but his recent book about the NHS shows him in a better light.

Sunak is sounding more and more like a latterday George Osborne, so I am very wary of him, even though I know the father of his best friend at school and college.

I don't know if you've seen it, but I thought Truss' campaign video was very good.

Interesting insight there Malcolm. A rare thoughtful appraisal without using Twitter.

I’d prefer Hunt, I just find Truss too slippery. I’ve no issue with folk changing their minds (how could I?) but she seems too ready to just change direction for her own sake.

The Health Sec job is arguably the poisoned chalice’s poisoned chalice. Takes balls to even accept it I reckon.

Hunt has stayed very much in the background. Probably the pick of the 3 main contenders.

Put the mortgage on it being Sunak then

I think the final decision will be with the Conservative membership and from what I’ve seen Penny Mordaunt is favourite after a poll of members.

Again, she seems ok.

Deserves a fair crack at it

Unfortunately, we won’t have a say in it. Until the next election of course. Someone will find something to find fault with her and the others. That’s normal.

Someone will find fault with the whole of the opposition come the next election as well. Apart from Starmer and Raynor, the rest have been hidden in the background. When the next election comes, they will be open to the same scrutiny as this government.

Interesting insight there Cheese. Well  done.👍

No problem Boby. If you're happy at the prospect of that intellectual woodlouse as Prime Minister, fair play to you.

I know nothing about her but apparently did a speech in the HOC and used the word cock frequently for a bet.

Sadly she has gone up in my estimation for that.

Most amusing

Im more concerned that she pronounced we would be awash with turks in the event of no brexit, despite being reminded we had a veto over new members

And, shes served johnson

I really, really, want rid of the lot of them

I didn’t say I wanted her as Prime Minister. I was commenting on Malcolm’s interesting insight into a prospective Prime Minister. He managed to give an appraisal without using language like ‘intellectual woodlice’ You can use your Jimmy Hill meme now if you wish.

Sunak is at least being honest about tax cuts , saying they will come but not yet.

The process whereby the MPs get the list to two and then the members choose will see a lot of deals being done. Hard too see how the winner will not be a Brexiteer and anyone seen to have turned on Boris will have a chance
