We got some Chinese slates the other year, what an absolute load of dog turd they were. Farted and the fuckers broke. Used them twice in one day, yes, the first and last bleedin time.

Fuckin srates.

Reckon Chinese soil must be like the finest silica sand- could work it with a feather.

Yes I know that from personal experience- fuckin Chinese hoe curled up like a Turkish slipper first use.

What's the particular grade of steel you use?

Duplex stainless 316L

Duplex stainless 316L

Ah that old friend... :)

Joking apart what particular properties does it possess, and have you any idea of other elements with it?

Curious as I once had a spell flogging cutting fluids, and I've always maintained a fascination with engineering since.

Something beautiful about seeing a lathe or drill etc working its magic, whilst lubricant flies here there and everywhere.

Reminds me of when @Rudy. First used his F5000

Do they require a special grade of steel too?

Of course, only the finest. Traditionally mahogany was used, but the latest models use duplex stainless 316L, mostly sourced from the Czech Republic I think

I just know it’s good for welding, takes ages to corrode (though it still can) and it’s fucking strong.

Beyond that, not a clue 😁

Just been reading up. Perhaps its the chemist in me.

Been looking into super duplex v 316L, etc

Former has more chromium, molybdenum, less nickel amongst other things.

Improved corrosion resistance and strength.

I even had vague recollections of a couple of lecturers, one of whom was a hearty, larger than life Scot, liked a wee dram but made lattice structures and chiral chemistry interesting. Top fella.

That’s the American standard. (316S11 British Standard) Surely you use the EU standard. Don’t you?

Same thing, ours is British Standard.

There are differences depending on the application but it’s down to thickness and carbon. Or summert.

We have kite marks so I assume we’re covered.

😊 I used to buy steel, amongst other stuff, 20 years ago. I’m familiar with most of the major WW standards. Just thought it was strange that you quoted an American standard whilst buying in Europe.

Not being pedantic but this thread is about Europe and technical details like  this illustrate why we are still more aligned to the US than Europe.

All stainless steel unistrut is marked 316L and that stuff hangs the equipment that keeps you alive in hospingtal so I'm happy with that 👍

Most of the standards are now aligned to one another anyway. An old German standard may have been better than a British one and visa-versa. I’m surprised that 316L is still being used. We adopted the EU standards 25 years ago. It illustrates my point that we were never truly integrated with the EU.

You obviously know it doesn't tarnish. Used extensively in food production (other than cutlery) and handling (usually 304) plus in the marine industry and a variety of other places. We used to use a lot of 321 at Walmsleys Paper Machinery for cladding mild steel parts for protection in that sodden environment.

Vanadium is a key ingredient. We have a few mines around here (a big one callled Windimurra).

We get Chinese stainless coming in and it is fucking shite. It actually does tarnish and even rust. The cheapskate bastards must skip the expensive anti corrosion components like cobalt.

We've mentioned a lot of its good properties but one issue can be how brittle it cn be.

Use a lot of both Duplex and super duplex for offshore piping for corrosion and the biggie weight

Zeron 100 was developed in Manchester at Weirs. Our MD was involved in the development Dr. Kevin Gradwell. He was from Bolton and a big Wanderers fan.

I bet Arthur gets into a scrape, Terry gets him out with his fists.

McCann will also shag some random bird.

If it was real his cock would've fell off around 1983. Stds.

He wore a Johnny at all times...ITK fact.

Dave the barman always gave the telling nod and said "be careful how you go Tel" 😉

I never saw him get 'something for the weekend, sir?' at the barbers or nipping into the chemist - but The Winchester might have had a johnny machine in the bogs.

I am going to contact Mr. Waterman to clarify this important issue.

Trust me mate, when you watch it again, watch Dave say "take care Tel" with a nod to the bogs 😉

It's these kind of observations which make the Brexiteers Visionsaries 😃

This Dr Gradwell- he didn't have a load of sons by any chance?

I only know that he had one. Saw him at the match once.

I've just had my first personal bit of an issue from a customer in Italy. They need product urgently, and we've quoted them, the manufacturing lead-time from China is 4 weeks (I know, I should have told them to place their order earlier.....)

Anyway, they're on a very tight schedule and pricing is always an issue with them, because they're Italian. So, they've just advised me they're buying from Germany instead, as we can't guarantee that there won't be some sort of hold up, or tariffs applied by the time the goods are ready in January......unless we're willing to absorb any tariff/uplift that may apply, which of course we can't agree to. As well as the cost, it's the uncertainty on the delivery as well, as they don't want the product delayed any longer than it needs to be.

We can't even do a direct shipment to them from HK, as we actually need to do something to the product before they can handle it. It's not a lot of business, maybe only around $60K, but we've just handed it straight to our competitor in Germany, which is a pisser.......and I've lost the £520 commission it would have given me, which is neither here not their in all honesty, but it's still not great
