Do you have any examples of the "better paid jobs" the warehouse workers should apply for?

Plumbing, Electrcian’s, joiners, reduce the need for foreign tradesmen and give support to train folk to get better paid jobs.

Who’s footing the Bill for that?

We can take it from the cash we won’t be paying the EU in yearly membership fees.... was it 9 billion nett? Well spent and would employ our people rather than filling jobs with Eastern European’s.

Now you’re talking

This “we” you mention - who are they and do you think they’ll actually do it?

We need trained installers rapidly

We as in U.K. government, perhaps with help from U.K. businesses who would benefit by offering apprenticeships to older suitable folk.

Let’s see how that goes.

Maybe theres a reason they work in a warehouse in the first place?

Possibly, but there will always be warehouse jobs, and I’m sure there are lots of capable folk working in warehouses who given support & same wage would jump at the chance of gaining a skill.

Exactly.

Maybe industry needs to take a bit of a look at itself.

Been too easy to 'import' skilled folk, and not invest locally.

Been coming down the tracks for some time this; coupled with the famous "education,  education, education" line, we've dropped short of developing youngsters in vocational type work, preferring to send every Tom, Dick and Harry to university to do nondescript courses and come out with a load of debt and a job/career path which quite possibly isn't there.

Fortunately, for a few years now this reality has started to dawn, and more apprenticeships are becoming available.

Let the £10 an hour warehouse jobs go to Europe, let’s invest in proper manufacturing and give our folk the chance of better paid jobs. Rebalancing the economy is partly what leaving was all about.

I dread to think how many people you're happy to see lose their jobs, albeit maybe only for a short period of time,  based on that statement - tens and tens of thousands of people I'd have thought

Anyone got that woman’s details yet so I can send her the equivalent of the devastating loss brexit has imposed on her?

I've tried having a look, but I don't know where the the quote was taken from, so I don't know her name or her company details - otherwise I'd happily do a full check on her, and find out if she's really been badly affected or not🙂

I've hard this mentioned by a few people, such as Farage, and obviously we'd love to have a decent manufacturing base here in the UK - but surely, as we're talking about doing a deal with these CPTPP countries, with some that are well known for their low cost manufacturing bases (Vietnam, Mexico & Malaysia), then that's going to be come more and more difficult. Obviously none of us know the details, but if we do go tariff free with these, I'd reckon that might not really help our manufacturing a great deal

I know some think we might be about to enter a golden age of manufacturing for the UK, and this will all be funded by our "savings" from not being in the EU any longer - but I'm a bit more skeptical

Has there ever been anything stopping 'local' folk going to college and learning a skill/trade?

Who said I’m happy to see folk lose their job? I’m saying there could be government help for older warehouse staff to retrain supported by government, better wages, less need for foreign workers, more folk in better paid jobs is surely the way forward, the economy is rebalancing and things are changing.  I welcome that and I welcome better opportunities and pay and government support to make it happen. This is exactly one of the reasons why I voted to leave the EU.

I thought I read you were moving back into the EU at the soonest possible opportunity so you can have egg, chips and San Miguel for breakfast every morning?
