A graph showing the problem Ms. Reeves has. ie. the cost of her borrowing and why she’ll have to make cuts to public services. It’s what some call austerity. Quote

They could go up tomorrow 🤷♂️ I never said they don’t matter. But what happens with them is only very very marginally to do with the budget or Reeves. There is little anyone can do about them. Their impact is the issue as I outlined yesterday and the day before. Nothing has changed in the U.K. economy in the last year - and that’s a problem. A big problem for Reeves. But that’s very different to the ‘oh gilts are spiking reeves has to do something’ narrative which was always total nonsense. Quote

You say very very marginally but many say it was more significant as my post from ‘Trading Economics’ showed. Here is another snippet from them. Interest rates affect everyone. ‘ Traders expect just one small interest rate cut from the Bank of England this year. Interest rate futures are pricing in only two reductions this year. Meanwhile, UK financial markets remain uneasy due to rising national debt concerns and uncertainty about whether the government can balance its finances while sticking to its budget plans.’ Quote
Spider Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 Did Brexit sleep through its alarm? Should be saving the UK from these global headwinds by now? Quote

Meanwhile, UK financial markets remain uneasy due to rising national debt concerns and uncertainty about whether the government can balance its finances while sticking to its budget plans.’ What people are saying and reality is not always the same. As a multitude of economic journalists and economists have pointed out this week the narrative on gilts is a nonsense. The relative rise and fall we see are (unlike after the Truss mini budget) entirely in line with historical comparative averages. We aren’t seeing ours rise higher than others outside of normal patterns. But as I said the issue we have is not that we have caused the rise (or subsequent record fall) it’s just if they stayed high we are exposed due to high debt and a lack of any headroom in the budget. Again that’s not reeves’ fault either but is a massive problem. Or would be if rates stayed high. And like I say she needs to find some growth to create some headroom moving forwards but doing so is going to ultimately likely result in gilts rising since if the economy looks like growing chance of interest rate cuts diminish.
