Guest Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 (edited) So today UK 10 year government bonds are outperforming German and US ones. If you followed the logic of some of the media reporting and headlines and nonsense from Ed Davey and other opposition parties shouldn’t the headlines now be ‘Reeves redeemed as economic plan works’? But that wasn’t really my point. Gilts have been pushed down lower today by news that retail was unexpectedly down in December meaning that it’s likely December shows no growth or negative growth. Fair few caveats on that as the number isn’t final. But the point is that all the nonsense ‘Reeves needs a growth plan to calm the markets’ was from economically illiterate people. The gilt markets aren’t reacting to economic performance or indeed politics in the way people think. They simply don’t understand. Lower growth or no growth or negative growth in many cases as we’ve seen today sees gilts market moves down. Growth would see gilts rise again. Quote

However, the latest IMF figures also showed weaker growth last year than it had forecast, growing by just 0.9 per cent last year, down from its previous forecast of 1.1 per cent. And the Office for National Statistics revealed on Thursday that UK GDP grew by a weaker-than-expected 0.1 per cent in November. This came after a 0.1 per cent decline in October and zero growth over the third quarter of the year. ❤️ Quote

Winchester White Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 That Jessop bloke knows his onions. If we rejoined the single market or customs union we would see a huge uptick in investment and business confidence. Alas, it will not happen any time soon. Quote
