Moderators Casino Posted December 13, 2017 Moderators Share Posted December 13, 2017 i think the reserve league at the time was still called the central league growing up, liverpool won it every year, generally with teams made up of players whoi never made it beyond liverpool reserves im sure that carrolls team won the league i thought we were on to something
Mounts Kipper
Bell, Callaghan I remember but didn’t get, Banks I’d never even heard of which is strange he can’t have ever pulled on a first team shirt.
Take Hunt Off
thought I would do better but only 19 out of 23, must have been some one game wonders in there ! Ian Stevens was the next big thing that never happened , nothing changes in football. Edited December 13, 2017 by Take Hunt Off
darwen_white
Ian Stevens was the next big thing that never happened , nothing changes in football. He must've done something right to have a home in Florida
Take Hunt Off
I meant for us goalscoring THAT never happened regardless of where he lives
Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted December 14, 2017 Site Supporter Share Posted December 14, 2017 Used to reckon Ian stephens had a double jointed skull. Seemed to be able to wrap his head round a crossed ball. Never a world beater but I quite liked him

Whites man
Someone on here had a phone row with Phil Neal about Ian Stevens. I know the story but it was Cat Stevens not Ian.
Farrelli
Might as well have been for the sense that Neal talked.
bolton va va
Went to the "meet the manager " thing in the Balmoral where somebody asked Phil Neal about Stevens & he replied in a snotty, "I know best" way. Even though he was right, he did himself no favours with his unpleasant attitude.

Do you not remember all those goalscoring records dead-eye shots Reeves and Morgan broke!?

Farrelli
I think Bolton Va va has probably summed it up. It was the snotty disrespectful attitude of Neal towards a young fan (he was about 14 at the time). We had precious few interested fans at that time and to be pissing them off like that was poor form. Having said that, he did take the phone call and I don't think any manager before or since would have!
Site Supporter Biggish Dave Posted December 16, 2017 Site Supporter Share Posted December 16, 2017 Phil Neal would either be a decent scout or he had decent scouts working for him. Brought in some players, just a hopeless manager. Much like Megson in many ways
Whites man
Neal could find a cure for male pattern baldness and beer guts but would still be castigated by some. He turned the direction of travel around and left the club in a better situation than he took it over with.
Moderators Casino Posted December 16, 2017 Moderators Share Posted December 16, 2017 Tis a decent point If the mistrust and lies had been around in the 80s we would have had more idea just how fcuked up bwfc was
Take Hunt Off
Agree Neal was or had good scouts definately improved the playing squad in terms of quality .Andy Walker was his best signing just a pity he didnt have good manergerial qualities.Remember him blubbering when we beat Bury to get to the playoff final I thought get a grip you tart .Imagine Rioch doing that .No you cant, that was the difference for me. He turned the direction of travel around and left the club in a better situation than he took it over with. Yep!!! He inherited an absolute clusterfuck of a football club that was at absolute rock bottom There was no money in football in them days and it may be a rose-tinted/romantic view of things but he was the beginning of our rise from Div 4 to Div 1. He reached the limit of his managerial abilities but at least he set us on the road upwards
Site Supporter Biggish Dave Posted December 17, 2017 Site Supporter Share Posted December 17, 2017 Certainly left Rioch with the foundations of a decent squad. I was convinced Scott Green was going to move on for huge money
