MalcolmW Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 Very sad news and such a shame his family don't feel they can attend. Can't work out if they're being a bit mard or if it really will be that bad though. There's no place for racism in any society but I do wonder if standing up to it with pride and dignity is a better way than coming off the pitch or not attending, a la Jesse Owens or Cyrille Regis? With regard to Owens there is plenty fake news. He was discriminated at home against both before and after his day of days in 1935 and Olympic successes in 1936 (for example, not allowed to live on campus, not eligible for a sports scholarship), he was treated fairly in Europe, and established a competitive friendship with his German long jump rival.
Winchester White Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 1990 world cup was ace. I was 12 years old and on holiday with my mum and her mate with a son of the same age as me. We stayed at a really nice family run aparthotel in Elounda, Crete. Mum let me have two bottles of woodpecker cider each England game as a treat but we were watching every game each night and once the other blokes got wind we were treated to plenty more. My first dabble with a wet gusset and my widgy being squeezed. Best holiday ever.

gonzo Posted June 8, 2018 Posted June 8, 2018 Re Italia 90. Were we actually that good? Not that impressive in the group stage. Scraped it past Belgium with last min wonder goal. Took two pens and extra time to beat Cameroon. Is that harsh? Seems like we just had what it takes to get through a cup competition. Something we’ve not since.
stevieb Posted June 8, 2018 Posted June 8, 2018 Seen a car with two flags sticking out the windows today. It's nearly here!

You need a bit of luck in a knockout tournament, something we've not had for a while. Onwards and upwards.

Read “One Night in Tu...” bollocks to it, sick of saying it! Awful first game, revolutionary second, average third, battered v Belgium, bullied but found a way v Cameroon, superb v Germany. Then again how often were we that good in Euro 96 and that’s gone down in legend too. Maybe a game and 2 halves? We just need a bit of luck and a couple of stirring performances and we’ll go far. Looking forward to this now.
Traf Posted June 8, 2018 Posted June 8, 2018 We were bang average in 90, but it was a brilliant World Cup.

Jam toast. I saw some extended highlights of the Spain QF a few weeks ago not just the penalties, I'd forgotten just how much they dominated in that game. Luck was most definitely on our side! There were moans from some of the other FA's that it had been arranged it so we wouldn't play a single game away from Wembley if results went to plan too but I suppose this happens for every host in a tournament, and not sure if us having to go play elsewhere would have been a bad thing anyway.

Didn't they have a goal disallowed for offside that wasn't as well? Still, how many times have we 'deserved' to win in tournaments but either had poor decisions go against us or lost on pens? All about getting it done. Germans and Italians are masters at it.

Spain had 2 disallowed, one definitely not offside... although Shearer skied one from under the crossbar too so we had a couple of chances as well We need to develop a winning, hard, possibly even cynical tournament mentality but how you do that is the big challenge

Both countries seemingly have a togetherness and identity that is likely to transmit to national teams etc England are usually bickering like fcuk with the press shite stirring

Both countries seemingly have a togetherness and identity that is likely to transmit to national teams etc Aye, but the Italian togetherness will only be good for meeting up to watch the World Cup day in the pub. Their last two wins both came against a backdrop of massive scandal that received plenty of coverage in the national sports dailies - it’s not like the press suddenly comes over all supportive in World Cup years. Germany and Italy have won more because they’ve been better.
