Just booked Gillingham, just over £30 with a travel card Euston Return, booked London to Gillingham separately, all told comes out under £40

The cheapest way is probably by splitting the ticket at Birmingham but being restricted to specified trains,

=  Manchester - Wycombe return  £48-25 ( before any railcard discount)
