They can, but those aren't.

With the right infrastructure we could get most the kids back in school or in childcare schemes over the summer. Class sizes of 30/33 have always been bonkers and virtually impossible to give every kid what they need from a teacher . SNP promised us 20 per class up here a long time ago but that's never been fulfilled. Same issue down south and London class sizes are ridiculous. 

If we can build a hospital in no time then why not more temporary schools before June? Get teachers from the last year of their degree in employment and get more Teach First and School Direct placements in. 10-20 per class. Ambitious I know but it's doable and with no vaccine in sight it's something we should be aiming for. Cheaper than paying furlough surely? 

I don't agree with the unions on this on but the plan from the govn. has lacked clarity. They haven't offered much practicality in terms of safety. Despite the generalisations, majority of teachers want to get back in, they just want it to be safe and with much smaller class sizes. Many of them, myself included, will also have elderly parents that they want to be able to see at some point without endagering.

Yeah, in the midst of a global pandemic, there are more than enough hurdles to navigate without treating the six weeks holidays as sacrosanct. If moving/shortening it saves rushing back to cram in lessons before an arbitrary date, then it's a no brainer.

It'd be harder to defend teachers (or unions) that don't want to go back now, but also wouldn't be prepared to try and make up some time later on. Accepting that they do also need some time off before the start of the next school year.

3 weeks break in summer would be plenty given the fact everyone is away from work as it is, and travel is unlikely for most.

People are happy to applaud, say they’re doing their bit etc etc but you watch that shit crumble at the suggestion of 7 weeks holidays being shortened.

All in it together my arse.

Drop it to 4 weeks. Give them an extra week at Xmas & Easter.

They've backtracked on that now and if any quarantine is brought in, France would now be included.

It was highlighted as a possible symptom some time ago, but it was added to the list of symptoms that should neccesitate self-isolation today.

Teachers are still working at the moment, as I said before, it they want to pay overtime then yeah, go for it.. I doubt they will. Otherwise you can't just make someone work extra. 

Should travel resume (which is a different discussion), then you're saying teachers can't take the holidays they've booked?

I mentioned on the travel thread that the quarantine would be unenforcable.

I'm saying it might be an idea to consider two or three weeks as opposed to six. Or defer it, or start the holidays now and go back in July.

I'm not on a crusade to do over teachers. There's too much sniping at other people/professions going on at the minute, with teachers getting more than any.

That said, before this is all said and done millions of people are going to be seeing things cancelled, taking pay cuts, losing jobs and having to generally bite the bullet. Two weeks holiday and a secure, full-time job to go back to is a result. Especially if it stops people being forced back early.

If July is the time the country is re-opening, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to then immediately have kids back at home.
