Not only emotionally by the sudden delusions of grandeur (we’ll ignore the FA Cup win because that’s scarred me for life anyway), but by not building a proper infrastructure alongside the stadium. Even the stadium itself is now an absolute weight around their neck with fairly poor non-matchday revenue streams, massive upkeep costs because Whelan built it on the cheap, having to spend a fortune on the pitch because it’s built on a swamp and ultimately the unnecessarily large size instead of something a bit more manageable. That, and then passing it down to his fuckwit grandson who’s previous foray in to business was managing to lose a million quid on a chippy directly outside a Premier League away end. Quote

Chrisj Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 Dave Whelan was the start of all Wigan’s issues just like Eddie Davies was with us . Both bankrolled their clubs to the PL but both clubs had no real way of funding it without them. When they both decided enough was enough the clubs were left in the mud. We are only now recovering from that with owners who aren’t flushed but would never put our club in danger again. Wigan on the other hand have been bought by people who probably stuck a pin in a map of England and it landed on Wigan. They have no connection to the club or fans and wanted to sell it when promoted but now that didn’t happen they are bricking it. Quote

He bailed us out when the sale of Burnden went south. We were in the Prem when ED took control, Wigan were in Division 4 when Dave Whelan bought them. There are similarities in how their time at each club ended (though ED was never implicated in any casual racism scandals) but don't let that cloud that Whelan bought them up 3 leagues, ED's money went on trying to keep us in the PL and get us back there. Aye, I don't think it's fair to say either were the start of the issues as though what's happened is their responsibility Both were just unfortunate they couldn't find someone who wanted to carry on the thankless/profitless task both took on Quote
gonzo Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 Eddies biggest mistake was allowing Phil Gartside to carry on making suicidal decisions. Quote

No-one else was or is going to do what he did. So they'll end up back where they started, but with the memories of winning the FA Cup. Same with ED, we'd probably have been not too far off where we are now without him. But it was a hell of a ride while it lasted. Quote
