The Newcastle Cup game was later, as i was at big school by then and didn't start till 75 so im guessing it was feb 76 and I'm not looking but i can remember a cartoon type drawing in the BEN of Ian Greaves dressed as a Chicago type gangster with the headline, St Valentine day massacre, so i assume it was feb 14 1976???

I reckon I might still have that BEN special somewhere!

I know I’m rambling to myself but had to check my ailing memory - first game I saw was Bolton v Plymouth on 13/3/76.  Didn’t realise the Newcastle cup game was only the month before!  Anyhow, no idea on 1975.

Bertie that was the same first match I attended also Plymouth at 6 years old a run of the mill midweek game nil nil .
I still remember it though floodlights and walk down Manchester road .and a decent crowd on that night . I Managed to track down and buy the program for the game last year .

Yep - thought Plymouth was a Saturday.  I was 7 years old.  Can still remember bits and bobs from the game - iirc Hugh Curran scored a belter which I went mad about as my first ever goal…..was disallowed for some reason.  Emotional rollercoaster even then - set the scene for the next 50 years!

Good to know it was someone else’s first match as well @Farnywhite

Anyone off here there on the day? Before my time but I've heard due to Sunday trading rules, you gained access via a programme or similar that was the same price as a ticket?

Was there. Repent thy sins think one of the signs said outside.

Will still have the programme somewhere.  Will try and hunt it down.

I thought it was a Tuesday but that’s memory for you will have to dig the program out  I can’t remember the team that day but I thought there was a player called ray train playing that sticks in my mind with being young but could have that wrong 🤔

There's a player in our team

And he is a goal machine

And his name is John Byrom, John Byrom John Byrom

John Byrom Byrom Byrom

John Byrom Byrom.

Still my favourite player of all time.

Replay was at St. James's, Newcastle. Another draw. The Elland Rd. game was the 2nd replay. Neutral venue.

So busy the motorway blocked ,& people parked on the hard shoulder & went to the ground.
