Have any other teams dragged themselves back from such ingnomniy ignominie ignominey shite to the 'zenith' of the Premiership in such a relatively short time (Aldershot relegation to Reading play-off final)? Hull City spring to mind...

Or 18 years from relegation to the 4th division to claiming a UEFA place via league position. Can't be many, if any, who have done that faster...

Between 1961 and 1969 Northampton Town went from Division 4 to Division 1 and back to Division 4.

To answer me own question - Watford. Relegated to Div.4 in 1975, qualified for UEFA by finishing second in the top flight in 1983.

I reckon they're the only team apart from us to have qualified for UEFA through league position AFTER having spent some time in Division 4. Though I'm sure Malcolm will correct me if I'm wrong

Well you're right AND wrong. Fulham entered the 4th tier (Division 3 at that time, now League 2) in 1994 and got to the UEFA Cup via the Inter-Toto thingy in 2003 having finished 13th. They qualified as West Ham, Spurs, Southampton and Middlesbrough didn't apply for a place.

Ah but then they didn't qualify for UEFA via their league place....nor did they when they got into it via the Fair Play rubbish.

Do we have anyone qualifying via Fair Play this year?

No - the places have gone to Norway, Finland and Netherlands. As usual the Nordic countries were all well placed, but England were 11th, just behind Wales (and Scotland were 8th).

I remember everyone throwing season tickets on the pitch which is daft.

Wimbledon would have in half that time but for Heysel & the susequent ban.

Two main memories of the day:

Firstly, the demo in the car park afterwards which ended in someone lobbing a brick through the front of the Shots team coach. Driver was shook up, and I remember thinking that whoever's fault our demise was, it probably wasn't the Aldershot team bus driver's ^_^

Secondly, Burnley had just survived in the league by the skin of their teeth on the last day. Now the fact that relegated Lincoln came straight back into the league the nest year wasn't known then, and so it was seen as the death of a team. And I couldn't help think that this could be us next year.

(As an aside, was that the year Torquay (or someone) survived in the league thanks to extra time brought about by a police dog biting one of their players??).

Do Wimbledon count ? Did they get relegated to Div-4 before qualifying for Europe ?

Went through Aldershot on the train on Tuesday. I'd forgotten the ground was next to the railway.

Only went to the first leg in 1987. After a 0-1 defeat, no way was I doing a 430 mile round trip for the home leg. Shit fan (again).

Who was it who got injured for us in Aldershot game but had to play on (was it because we only had 1 sub in those days?)

Remember someone hobbling round. Was it our keeper? Dave Felgate?

Did Fulham not teeter on the brink of non league at one point. I seem to remember hearing Jimmy Hill nearly crying on the radio, it must have been in the 90s.

Reason for edit = Yes they did as Malcolm pointed out earlier.
