No. Everyone will have to do National Service and fit it around their lives. There will be very limited deferments and none for university students.

So the Conservative Party (or someone from) got in touch with the telegraph and said “listen in, we aren’t going to call England players up but royal family members will be getting a call” or something similar. Brilliant 👍

This National Service thing is just dog-whistling for crusty old, hate filled Tory voters, who think kids should be punished for being alive in what is a much, much tougher environment than any of them lived through.

Keith and Karen might not vote this time round... "What?? National Service? Where's me pen! I like the sound of that. Yeah I know that I didn't do it, but they bloody well should!"

It's another stupid manifesto pledge that won't materialise even if they did somehow get voted in for another term. They haven't even costed it and have admitted that they cannot legally enforce it

You would think the govt, as it their policy, would have said exactly who is or isn't eligible rather than letting media outlets decide

Unless the media outlets are asking Tory MPs, who haven't been briefed, and are giving what they think it covers

My dad is almost 70 - Proper Tory age. Even though he isn't one. His childhood was spent going to school, playing out with his mates, getting into a bit of mischief, fingerin' birds and getting leathered on a Friday night. Never went to war, never had to do National Service, owned his own house by 24 without being saddled with debt and still had the lifestyle he wanted.

His generation had it feckin well easy!

Kids where I live zip about on £500 - £1000 mountain bikes, have a £1000 phones, wear all the best clobber, spend hours gaming on £500 consoles, play footy where they want, go to gyms, cross at zebra crossings.

The price of those things are irrelevant. The bikes you zipped about on as a kid were probably the same amount allowing for inflation, but now to have those things, families are saddled with debt. I'm the last middle class generation that will be left with inheritance for instance. When I pop my clogs, my kids will take on debt, not cash and a feckin parasitic landlord will end up with their family home.

My parents had it miles easier than my kids will! 100%
