Having read 2 articles on the internet in recent months I am an expert. Basically a virus mutates as it’s environment changes. So a really lethal version would kill itself off as its hosts die and a less lethal one becomes prominent.

That makes sense, a virus wants to survive, so ideally it doesn't kill its host.
