It just moves the deaths to later date, once lockdown ends it starts up again, only vaccine or herd immunity stops it.

Say we closed down 2 weeks ago we would now be coming out of it with infections etc dropping. If we then go back to ‘normal’ the infection would start growing again. There is plenty of talk about a second peak. Closing down too early would as I understand it just lead to a bigger second peak. The long term level of infection will not change as at some point the restrictions lift. What the Govt are trying to do us ensure as often as possible when someone gets serious infection there is an ICU bed.

Maybe the hope is that we will better prepared to test and monitor people down the line as so also manage the infection level down  ?? 

 

Agree with all of this. For me the government has taken a long term view. When we and other countries come out of lockdown, there will inevitably be an increase in infections. 
It won’t have disappeared.
It’s all about managing it so as not to overwhelm the NHS not eradicating it. 

In 12 months time, the world will look back  and the cock waving and recriminations will begin. Some on here have already started.

If n is the number of people infected by a person, once n drops below 1, then it dies out

I agree 100% with you, we can't just let the economy tank. Ultimately it will be for those running the country to decide where/when the tipping point is. At some point, even if the virus is still here in a big way, we're just going to have to stop lockdown and get back to ensuring we don't enter a massive depression, which could kill even more than the virus ever could /would

I’m just stating fact that we are 50% less deaths here than Italy, not sure why you think it’s some sort of contest, as per usual you leap to a hysterical conclusion.
