Not so sure. They got moved under the Council and then council budgets were shredded. They used to be a big department. Now it's about 3 people working in the town hall.

Why so few people in the department ? Cutbacks ? Why ? Not enough money available at a guess. I wonder how much of a Tax hike for normal people and putting a stop to the avoidance by rich people and companies could have made all the difference ? My guess is 1% all round would have meant pot loads of money being available.

See you’re as much of a clown as always Michael. Even Easter  Sunday you don’t have a day off

It must be exhausting being you. Everything is an argument. You must be shagged out😀

Now now Mr Hedley, I've not once said the government are beyond scrutiny.

As you were 👍

Who said you were in the gang of four? Not sure they want the likes of you 😉

That's good to hear. I'm too calm these days for the foursome 😊

Does anyone known if the Italian and Spanish figures include non-hospital deaths eg care homes and in the community? I know the French now do (although they originally didn’t include them).

Up to last week, they didn't include them in Italy, not sure about Spain though.

Thanks. Useful to know if we’re comparing apples with apples.

Got the Italy info off Reuters, seems to sadly be a big stink over there too with numbers out of hospitals

I’d be surprised if any government has got its response right.

Saw someone comparing us with Ireland earlier on twitter. We have dozens more densely populated cities than them plus a super metropolis in London. It’s just not fair to compare every country like for like.

plus, there’s really no point. Doesn’t change where we are.

I think we delayed a week or so too long if I’m honest, but not sure it would have made a massive difference.

I think as we're going to more than likely have periods of relaxed and strict lockdown then looking at how lesser infected countries approached it makes perfect sense

Eg maybe the next time we need to shut down we do it sooner, maybe we police the levels of folk on public transport and in particular the tube in the same way supermarkets do

This isn't one period of lockdown and we're done then just hope it doesn't happen again

We need to learn how to make a difference now and that includes critical analysis of everything that's been allowed to happen

Let make no mistake we will learn from this collectively. And it will also I think have a profound impact on the way we live going forward to a certain extent

Public Health became the responsibility of Local Councils under the 2013 Health and Social Care Act more commonly known at the Lansley Reforms. In the intervening years many local authorities have had massive reductions in their central government grant's and have chosen to reduce costs in this area. There's no local election votes in public health and the effects of said cuts tend to be longer term and their impact felt in the NHS.

It was a cynical move by the government and an entirely predictable response from local authorities. Government can claim they didn't cut NHS  budgets and local authorities can claim they were responding to their electorate, theres more votes in bin collection, council tax freezes, libraries etc for local authorities since this is what voters traditionally associate with them.
