Spain really got on top of it, figures fell dramatically, then made the inevitable decision to reopen the borders and let tourists in, now figures are rising again. Look what happened in Magaluf.

Apparently (The Times again), a lot of the French cases are coming from tourist areas like Brittany

Doesn't bode well for my trip there in 4 weeks

I think it’s a knee jerk, ill thought out decision and one that will be pulled apart over the next few weeks.

You may be right.

What surprises me is that it's been done by a government that have been brilliant so far.

It's so out of character.

I think it is knee jerk potentially also. But I don’t know what other option they had. It was this or let it run. And letting it run wasnt really feasible for my way of thinking.

But, but,  but a fortnight in the sun.

There's genuinely a woman on my wife's facebook feed who has been rabid in her criticism of the government for not taking CV seriously enough. She's always having a pop at anyone suggesting schools should open (she's a social worker) and has parents shielding etc.

Weirdly, her attitude towards CV is suddenly completely different now it threatens her fortnight in Benidorm. She's stopped posting memes about Boris dithering with the lockdown and is now saying he's an over zealous fool.

Utter plum

The conservative woman is where I go for my expert analysis and comment - the lastest gem, from a private school teacher in Cornwall.

"I seriously believe that the government have done a real quick one here. There will never be a change around. I suspect that I am now living the last five years of my life. If they do not get me with the vaccine and kill me off ( no I wont be taking voluntarily or even by mandate unless held down). I can see that sooner, rather than later I will be herded ( by some factor - either age or colour rather than rebellion and dissent ) into some camp somewhere where I will be asked to take a final shower. I am not kidding.

Before they do that I suspect there will be a tax taking maybe 50% of all savings out of every persons account. Money will be useless as it will no longer be legal tender - so any under your mattress will have to go into an account and be "seen" so they can tax you - all in the name of this virus of course. Any money I leave to my child or my mother leaves me will be taken at the death of the person.

This is the new communist fascist state and we are already in it. I didnt allow it. I cant fight back alone"

Just to highlight how rediculous the quarantine on returning from Spain is, deaths in Spain in the last week, 12, deaths in the uk 426. Enough said.

Why don't you just go, and don't bother with quarentine when you get back? It's not like anyone can make you

As I’ve never claimed in 40 years I’ll take my chance. And we still have the EHIC card if you fall ill.

Bloody Europeans and their free health cover.

The sooner that ends the better. (Spoiler: It ends in December)

It’s reciprocal and will continue to be so.

That's great news, I didn't know we'd negotiated that bit yet. It makes sense though. Hopefully now that it's been agreed, we'll start claiming back when tourists come over here and use our NHS, as for some reason successive governments have never really bothered (which is a scandal)

Edit: Just checked, apparently nothing has been agreed yet: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44850972

I'm struggling to find the part in the Oven Ready deal where that's been agreed, perhaps you can help?
