Youri McAnespie
@jmjhb My history is probably a bit shaky then. I always assumed it was a celebration of the incompetent Pilgrims devoted to surviving a harsh first winter. Only due to assistance from the heathen native I might add. It's also bollocks they pissed off over there to escape persecution and intolerance. They pissed off over there so they could be free to persecute and be intolerant. It’s an extension of our own Harvest Festival.
Youri McAnespie
Yeah - but they'd dropped a bollock and didn't have a harvest to harvest. It took Hiawatha and Sakajarjarbinks to bail them out. So the fracture from our harvest festival was complete. Anyway, some of them did come slinking back - should've told 'em to sling their hook. Like Shamina Bighun or Argentina 'supporting' munchen. Have a read up on them - real fucking oddbods even by the standards of the time. Site Supporter fatolive Posted November 28, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted November 28, 2020 Halloween no worries as it was a festival here of old, it’s more revived than imported in one sense Baby showers absolute shite hate the way that’s become a thing . find people claiming to support American football teams a bit strange but each to their own thanksgiving is good solely for the fact it’s the basis of planes trains automobiles calling the Arndale or Trafford centre a “ mall” is another and probably comes from all the American kids tv shows in truth it’s been creeping in for ages, burger and fries for example. I worked with a bloke who wouldn’t drink coke or Pepsi because he considered that “American pop coming over here making it impossible to get dandelion and burdock soon “
Youri McAnespie
@jules_darby @MickyD I'm pissed now. Goddamn assholes. I'm off to eat 2kg of deep-fried meat covered in melted cheese. And watch a sitcom featuring grossly obese but inexplicably successful characters. Or perhaps the fourth down of The Tampa Tamperers vs The Beverly Hillbillies. The 'billies are two for nine going into the fifth, but the Tamperers are coming back strong with a field goal from third baseman Pete O' Phile. Could go either way. Stop the count - MAGA. Philly cheese-steak. Had one while visiting Philadelphia. Pretty much a french stick loaded with steak, onion and cheese. Couldn’t finish it. Youri McAnespie
Thinly veiled - did you run up the Rocky steps? To be fair this recipe probably accounts for about 90% of the dishes featured on the likes of 'Man vs Food', 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives' and 'Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares' etc. Humongous portion sizes too - no wonder there's so many chubbmeister and chubbmistresses over there. Tbf some looks quite tasty looking, the food, but is probably so calorific as to make 'our' giant mixed kebabs seem like health food. Youri McAnespie
Surely you had a acapella singalong with some winos stood around an oildrum fire? Or chucked your helmet at Rocky's statue? I always thought Philadelphia would be one of those places that was still genuinely rough as fuck in parts... Boby Brno
I think it was Kent who said he felt closer, in culture, to Europe than the US. I agreed with him. I’ve said it before, many of the pro Europe people on here have no idea about what goes on a few hundred miles east but are obsessed with things on the west side of the Atlantic. Not in Crawley
Having worked with Americans i have to say, in my experience our cultures are very, very different. I was surprised how different we were, and yet when working with Dutch, French, Finnish, Spanish, Germans... there are lots of crossovers and shared sensibilities. Americans seem like their country, just young. Its like they see any questioning or due process as negative thinking. In some ways its great because they really push things forward, in other ways success appears to be just dumb luck. I like that Halloween is a thing now, but if I ever hear a British person say Math, I will break their fingers one by one.

Site Supporter MickyD Posted November 29, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted November 29, 2020 (edited) Drove from Toronto to Indianapolis because we thought we’d see lots of ‘middle America’. How wrong we were! The only thing you follow on the map are the water-towers which every small township still has. I’m not sure if they’re in use as water-towers or as navigation signs for motorists. We decided to stay over at a place called Mansfield, Ohio. Talk about a land that time forgot. Most of it was like walking onto the set of a1950s movie or Happy Days. We spoke to folk in a bar that evening and there response was how come we Brits noticed yet their own money men, the House of Representatives and The Senate and other groups with fingers on purse strings not noticing that almost all the infrastructure money is spent in the large towns and cities. A point understood more when we got to Indianapolis next day and noticed the Perspex tubes following pavements around and between shops and hotels so that as many pedestrians walked twenty or so feet above street level as there were actually people on the pavements outside. All very futuristic but that doesn’t help the people in the smaller towns. Edited November 29, 2020 by MickyD

Youri McAnespie
It's not about Americans doing American shit - let 'em crack on. Even when there's an atrocity I don't feel it's our place to chime in on gun control. It's about the erosion of British (and other nation's) cultures and traditions. Who took their kids trick or treating? Bought costumes, treats, pumpkins and other decorations etc.? Nowt wrong with that but... Who built a bonfire, made a Guy, bought fireworks and sparklers etc. - made or bought; Parkin, black peas, the wrongly maligned lobby, brandy snaps, baked spuds - and my own personal tradition, pork chops? Bonfire Night passes not with a bang but a whimper - Halloween crap starts appearing in shops in August ffs... When I left school some lads and lasses met up and got pissed on the Fair on Longcauseway. That was our leavers do. Not a £200 suit nor a £400 dress nor a £150 taxi ride nor a £50 a head sit-down meal. It's a load of old yankee-doodle bollocks adopted so readily to empty wallets, purses and pockets.
