That was very similar to my experience there

Despite signs saying no photos they were happy to pose for selfies

Someone pointed this out to them and got some abuse

Aye, just as we were walking up to Birkenau II there was a group of friends laughing and joking and taking selfies. It just seemed such a completely inappropriate thing to do.

I wondered if it was just a one off when I was there? But sounds like it wasn't. It felt very much like a school trip. Almost like they were glorifying in it rather than paying their respects or being solemn. If I'd not seen their flags I'd have had a word myself.

Aye

They said "this is our memorial not yours"

But there were Communists etc killed there and I could have been wanted to pay my respects to them

Some of the kids on national service are really arrogant from my experience. A lot of them go backpacking around Thailand and generally treat the Thai's like shit. Mind you perhaps it's no worse than some of our 18/19 year olds in Benidorm. Maybe it warps your mind growing up thinking the world is trying to kill you?

Or maybe it's just genetic? 😉

Aye, they started off with Soviet PoWs and whilst the vast majority killed were Jewish it is a memorial to all those who perished.

Seeing some of the experiments Mengele carried out on the Roma kids broke my missus, the whole place is horrific and doesn't sugar coat anything.

Wish I’d paid head to the warnings about top level of war museum in Saigon. Very dusty.

I've been to Auschwitz and can only speak about my experience.

On the day I was there - there were loads of young Israelis there too in uniform. Presumably on national service.

They were laughing and joking and larking about on the railway tracks. With their Israel flags out and taking Insta type photos. I'd have gone fucking mad if I were in charge of them and/or the keeper of the place.

I found it really disrespectful to be honest. But then I'm not Jewish - so it's not my place to tell them how to behave/not behave.

Aye same mate. One Jewish woman was in bits & some Chinese tourists were milling about smiling for selfies. Muppets

I was about 15 at the time though & very hungover 😂

But it was all those shoes that’ll stick with me

Have you read 'I was De Mengele's Assistant' by Miklos Nyiszli?

It's really grim - but fascinating to get that level of insight.

Yeah it's harrowing. Auschwitz and Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Phen are the most moving places I've ever been to. That and the British War Cemetery in Kanchanaburi near the death railway on the river Kwai.

I went to Auschwitz on my own on a bus trip. Just before I walked into the first gas chamber - my phone buzzed with my Dad messaging me to tell me my grandma was dying. It was about 30 minutes into a 4 hour trip!

I can laugh about it now and my Grandma would have found it funny. But jesus. That was one grim afternoon! 😁

For the wife it was the hair, as to old school Romany women their hair is a huge source of pride (hers is dead short and has been every colour under the sun), that and the walking sticks etc.

As a white bloke who's family hails from as far as Oldham it was traumatic enough.

For me it was those tiny little cells they used to put people in and then forget about. Like an oubliette at a castle in medieval times. The horrible sick cunts.

I always try to remember that we're just intelligent chimps - and capable of unimaginable cruelty to other intelligent chimps.

Have you read about Unit 731? That just blew my mind.......

well, the nuclear abilities were totally obliterated (I think that's the term Trump used) and set back decades last year, and we've since gone and destroyed/obliterated them even more, so I'm guessing there's no problem there. They're bigly destroyed, in a way nobody has ever seen

The illegal expansionism is the tricky part, especially when they claim it's a way of defending themselves.

We are returning to Rabin's original plan... land for peace deals with Palestine,Jordan, Syria, Lebenon to counter the rise of radical Islam. Netanyahu opposed conceding any land and we have seen the military build up and Iran possessing kilogramsof enriched uranium.

My point is that as it is all getting flattened back to as it was 30 years ago maybe all the players can start again and negotiate land deals

I went as part of a lads weekend

got leathered the night before, missed the main tour operated coach there, so got on a local bus which was tiny, cramped, dead hot and took about 2 hours

first thing I did when got to Auschwitz was in the bogs and proper sweating throwing up, wretching and all that bile type shit for about 10 minutes, then spent most of the time round thinking I was going to shit myself

Anybody else had a more depressing day out than me and Zico?

I am the son of a lad from Belmont who ended up driving his tank through the gate of Bergen Belsen... he never ever mentioned it, I only found out by researching the Regimental Diary

@royal white - Galatasary fans banned from Anfield tonight.

Racist bastards! 😉😁

Should have been banned years ago, not because they’re mainly muzzies but because they’re horrible bastards (though the 2 usually come hand in hand 🎣
