Xmas Dinner

What we having?

Sister in law (modest handful) and her fella split, in-laws in France, so it's just the five of us at home. If I'm honest, I can't really be arsed; it's an early Sunday dinner, and will have all the fannying around without the extra gifts and booze.

Anyway, kids want turkey. They didn't have mash last year, and tbf I didn't miss it; however they insist. The wife usually asks for gammon, and that's my usual contribution to a family meal. I'm looking forward to making gravy, semifredo etc in advance. Go forth good folk of WWays; inspire me with your festive fayre

We had it out on Xmas but it’s expensive and we had to wait on late arrivals. Not worth it. Can understand going out but I prefer being a slob all day or having a shit Xmas meal in an Irish pub in Thailand after a firey Thai breakfast

Went to the Blundell... Meat was OK but I think eating out is for twats who can't cook.

Or don't want to wash up.

Glad it has improved from when we went a few years ago. Was absolute bobbins.

We paid £60 a head for curry yesterday including drinks and tip which I reckon is pretty decent compared to the cost of ‘traditional’ meals, and no washing up.

Leg of lamb and all the trimmings today, though.

100% going out next year.

Think you've got to genuinely enjoy cooking and being in the kitchen to get any form of enjoyment out of the day.

Aye, I enjoy it.

Full Xmas dinner cooked in 2 hours for us. Whilst boozing and listening to music.

Top day.

We had 9 at ours yesterday for a full Christmas lunch.

Most if it was prepared on Christmas Eve, turkey in the oven at 9am, ready for 2pm, veg etc cooked then and all ready for 3pm.

Total cost less than £60 and delicious but next year we fancy going away for some sunshine.

£30 for all the meats I needed (and extra) off Flecky’s (some will know him on here) stall on the market, enough for 7 of us yesterday, turkey broth today and turkey butties for tomorrow and the day after.

Neighbour paid £90 for theirs from M and S and said it was shite.

What meats did you purchase and did you know where they came from?

Wouldn't want an el-cheapo bird that had never seen the light of day and had to battle beak and claw to feed.

Chicken breasts, turkey, world’s biggest pig in blanket, pork sausages, bacon.

All freshly reared and slaughtered at the back of Gibraltar st.

The added bits a the things folk like the most!

Sausage meat, pigs in blankets aren't regulars with standard beef and pork joints.

Thank you 😉

I'm just not a big fan of a roast dinner if truth be told. Add in the fact that Turkey has to be the worst of the roast meats people have and it's not a good combo even before the additions of shit like sprouts, cranberry sauce, bread sauce and mushy peas.

One plus point to a Christmas dinner, though, is that you don't have Yorkshire puddings on.

That's where we differ I guess. I could happily eat it every week. With Yorkshire's as well (but not mushy peas) 😁

Aye.

Used to hate a roast as a kid.

Now I love 'em.

I've never liked Yorkshires to be honest.
I don't like batter or pancakes either.

Did actually have a lovely bit of lamb at my brother-in-law's house on Xmas Day, but no yorkies.

Me too. I’d say it was probably because eating time meant being inside rather than out with mates.

I used to hate a roast, love them now.

I think it's because, for some reason, we used to have boiled potatoes, which I fucking hate. I've banned them from my house, so any roast I have, the only spuds allowed on the plate are roast spuds.

Aye, boiled potatoes are shite. No mash though?

I like mash, just never have it on a roast dinner.

Taking off potatoes.....I'll tell you what is a right load of shit, jacket potatoes. Fucking rubbish they are.

I love jacket potatoes as a lunch or a lighter meal. Good base for a chilli, a curry, mushy peas for example. But it’s not a main meal for the day.

Hear hear.

Boiled are rarely OK, tend to go mushy. Can't be doing with mash- evil stuff.

Roasties are stupendous, and a newly dug new potato, steamed is heavenly.

Just dug some out today!

For me though, as a kid I didn't like veg the same.

Still not a great fan of certain ones, but will happily eat plenty now.
