Last night got the pumpkins for outside and everything else outside goes up on Saturday - the three boxes of decorations have already come down from the loft.

Also it's from Samhain so it's not originally from America - if anything if you've got Scottish or Irish roots you are reclaiming it back, and trick or treating has its roots in Medieval Britain in things called Souling or Guising.

 

 

Interesting history. The word comes from All Hallows Day. Which is the the day before ‘all saints day’ 
We used to celebrate it at school without the nonsense (Catholic) 

Definitely American influence has turned it into a commercial rip off. I thought just for kids. 
I prefer bonfire night and the burning of another Catholic. 😉

I think All Hallows Day is All Saints Day and Halloween is Hallows eve.

Love a good halloween party - bonfire night is good as well - already got our fireworks sorted. But I have to say the fact that you're charged through the nose now to go to a commerical firework display instead of a local bonfire has taken a lot of the fun out of it, and the younger generation certainly don't seem to care for it like we used to. That I can't get black peas down here for love nor money.

A good local bonfire, with associated grub is spot on.

Fireworks are a different matter for me- owing to the number of cunts and a prolonged period, I'd prefer no fireworks to be sold to the public.

Make them all properly organised, professionally created displays.

My dad used to do the Accounts for Carrs Pasties when they just had the shop on Halliwell Road. Used to get a tray from there on Bonfire night went down a treat at our bonfire.

Picked red cabbage, onions or whatever. 

Treacle toffee seems to suit the cooler weather. 

Also make a pumpkin cake, lightly spiced, with dark sugars. Rich, moisture and really tasty.

For me it would just be a simple pasty or a pie, I know a traditionalist like @Spiderwill no doubt rave on about parkin and/or black peas.....both of which generally have the density of a collapsed star, and are rank. They're both the sort of food that people say they like, from some childhood memory, and when they eat them as an adult, they realise how grim they really are (hence only scoffed/produced for 1 night a year)

I've said this for a long time, hopefully we'll get there one day. A proper organised firework display is usually tremendous.

So far this year, we've been quite lucky, as we've not had people setting them off yet, but in years gone by, folk have been known to be setting them off a couple of weeks either side of November 5th.

I'm lucky that my dogs don't mind them, in fact when we go to the local display, we take ours along - I know other dog owners aren't always as lucky, and some pooches are scared to death of the things
