Ooof

Said other week it has all the hallmarks of a cold one this year.

Noticed big blooms of autumn berries and squirells all over gaff.

Can feel it this morning, Chilly on the digits.

Cool today.

Been a brilliant year for berries/fruit, though elderberries were down a bit and seemed to dry up quickly.

Currently into making around 150 bottles worth of wine/mead with another 40 or 50 to do.

Lots of blackberries still in the freezer too.

My apple tree had its best ever harvest.

Big fuck off fuckers as well.

Next to nothing last year.

Strangely, the warm spell meant my discovery apple tree had a major 'June drop' in July, and the squirrels had all the others. Not a single apple!

However, other apple trees around and about seem heavy.

Will be making more beverages yet!

Is this years heatwave why stuff is blooming so late?

And why fruit is going mental? My mum is shipping tomatoes out of her greenhouse like Walter White and his meth. And her friend is the same with plums.

Runner beans etc have come on late. The heat meant they were subdued. As soon as some rain came they've blossomed and fruited. Been picking quite a few last week or so.

If your mum's mate has any spare plums, I'll gladly have some!

I'm thinking about growing my own vegetables.

Are there any suitable for growing at this time of year?

My rudimentary research suggests winter radishes and turnips might be alright?

I sowed some seeds about 3 or 4 weeks back.

Lettuce, spinach and radish.

Lettuce didn't germinate. The rest did but the pigeons had the lot. The bastards.

Have a look online or in a garden centre on the seed packets.

Some you do now for later/spring.

Trouble is, with cooler weather forecast, germination may be poor.

A greenhouse will help, especially if you can use propagator.

Light levels will restrictions growth so stick to things the packet says will grow.

I'm still picking beans and last of the outdoor tomatoes.

Spuds done, and squashes have been decent. Some ripening nicely for Halloween/eating.

If you're serious, it may pay to get some veggie beds prepared and manured ready for traditional spring type stuff.

Do you have a compost heap/Dalek thing?

Worth it to get a load of muck and break it down yourself a bit before spreading it.

Either that or use ready composted, but this will cost you a bit.

Last year I kept some pig shit wrapped up for a few weeks then spread it on the beds in early winter. The worms etc did their bit slowly. A few weeds obviously but produce has been great.

Also, get yourself a water butt, and/or a hose near to your veggie beds. Can be a ball ache fetching and carrying water by the can load, and will likely demotivate, so make life easy for yourself.

I've only got a raised seedbed and liner so far. I'll be nipping to the garden centre this weekend for the rest and will use ready composted to get me started.

We've got an outside hose tap near to where the seed bed will be so I should be sorted for watering.

Well he won't have many plants, it's not annual nor veggie season.

Recently got a job lot of sulphate of potash which they're doing a decent price on. I don't use much like.
