bgoefc Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 when we don't have the ball we look like a team who has never met each other. and therein lies the real problem. That's why I disagree with most on here when they say we should be pissing this league and we have more quality and the best squad. Attack is only half the game, you cannot rely on it unless the side can finish and bang in 3-4 goals a game. The players in this squad that Coyle put together cannot defend and the keeper is shit. If Mourinho came in as manager he could not get this lot promoted as none of them has the nous about what they need to do without the ball and a lot of that simply cannot be coached. A squad full of pretty powder puff players who cannot defend and cannot put the goals away when well on top! Quote

Completely disagree with all that, we do have the quality, and the players to do well in this league, its just a few things need to happen, first and foremost we need manager and assistants with an ounce of knowledge on how to set a team up, secondly said manager needs to work on their fitness levels, and not least bring in a defensive coach who can actually coach, if all that should happen I feel we will be at least top 6, keep it as is and I fear it will be bottom 6. Carlos Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I watched Barcelona last night, they are a great team without the ball. They close down immediately, 2 or 3 players surround the ball. This obviously leaves free men but no time to exploit that. They never back off, never let the other team play. It's anti-football and anti what we do. But it works. Quote
Gumbo Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 It's called the 4 second rule. Attempt to win the ball back in that length of time Quote

Well lets see were we in up in May. I said 10 -14th before the season started and can see no reason to change my mind, Coyle will eventually go but as I said I just cant see the quality everyone is harping on about. Quote
Carlos Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I thought it was primary school football, all chasing the ball, but it's fucking effective. Plus Puyol organises the defense like a master. When the get the ball, it never goes long. Always to feet, no problem going backwards, but never to the goalkeeper as that's coming straight back. Enlightening to watch. Quote

Enlightening to watch. without wanting to sound diddle esq it is good to watch. however the players have to be super fit to do it and have the technical ability and coaching to pass and move as a team when they have the ball to make bloody sure they are not chasing down for more than 30 - 40% of the game. That means holding onto the ball for over 60% of the time. we should do more of it but: 1. you need the type of player to buy into the hard work 2. they need to be fit and organised when the opposition has possession. Clough teams were good at this. Quote
Carlos Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) I'm not convinced about the fitness as teams back off them, giving them time to rest. Yes, you need to be able to pass the ball, and having players that can hurt you like Messi helps. According to The Guardian, Barcelona has 79% possession last night. Seems pretty simple, retain the ball, win the ball back ASAP. Edited October 3, 2012 by Carlos Quote
superjohnmcginlay Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Good point about possession, second half in particular we gave it away to easily by the long ball, theres plenty of folk whinge if a pass goes backwards, Id rather us knock it about accross te back keep the ball and work an opening at times Quote

Carlos Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Maybe, just maybe, because there's a substantial number of utter cunts just waiting for that so they can boooooooooooooo? Quote

Attempt to win the ball back in that length of time Thought that was summat to do with eating stuff that's been on the floor Or how long it would take me to spunk in my pants if I saw Mila Kinus naked Or how long Mills can retain possession for before hoofing the ball forward Or how long it takes Jazza to drink a pint Or Coyle to spout shite in interviews after our matches Quote
