My Garmin was about £90, it doesn't do much until you connect it to a PC but I reckon the distances it tracks are accurate.

I have a midrange Garmin; automatically syncs with Strava and they pretty much give identical readings for distance

Best thing I've come across is them joe wicks books as they give you a good idea of what you can eat if you commit to exercise as well

 

 

 

 

Mrs Sweep has got the books and signed up for his 90 day plan. The food is really good. She's only a few days in, but I'll report back after a week or two when we know how she's doing

 

 

Mrs Sweep announced to me this morning, that 17 days into the 90 day plan, she's shed 7lb and also 2" off her hips. She's been sticking to it fairly religiously, and is getting up early every morning and doing the HIIT exercises. 

 

I'm eating the same food as her, and I'll be honest, it's actually more food than I would normally eat.......and it's actually very nice.

If your looking for a decent recipe book for dieting then I have just bought the Tom Kerridge diet book on a recommendation, will let you know what its like but he has 2 Michelin stars and has just lost 12 stone so I'm hoping it will have some decent recipe's in

I saw him on TV the other day, I thought he looked awful, he's lost too much weight.

 

Anyway, you should never trust a skinny chef, that's what I say

Don't buy garmins, fitbits, step counters. Just Don't do it. 

 

Hairy dieters books good. Swimming is unbeatable all round exercise.  Spinning classes too if you can handle being called gay. Don't join a gym if weight loss is your aim. The pavement is free.

I read an interview he gave some 18 months ago. The jist of it was that he just packed in eating 3 bags of pork scratchings and drinking 8 pints a day and then started swimming in the morning and built it up to a mile a day.

Why?

 

If they help you to set (and achieve) targets then that's a good thing, surely?

i have run on the roads a lot recently however joined the gym last night. it may be free but the pavements shit and cold. give me a decent gym anyday. i lost 5 stone in the gym so it can't be that bad.

Because the temptation is likely to be that let's say you need to do your 10,000 steps a day, you get to 9500 and think oh fuck it, that counts, let's have a massive cake. Overall I have found in a lot of people that these gadgets create artificial targets and incentives, which of course mean rewards. Rewards are bad, especially when you've done fuck all.

 

I'm 35 this year, have a very unexceptional diet, drink too much by  an amount even computers can't work out and according to my last scan, a metabolic age of 27. By no means am I special but I work hard at it and don't con myself. It's all getting too complicated all these cookbooks, fitbits and whathaveyou. Eat less, move more. That's it.

I'm with Maggie here, some numpties yesterday discussing which app they used. Me, I went and did my row then push pressed two thirds of my bodyweight. The only gadget employed apart from a Concept 2 was a chalkboard to record results.

i found it different. we got some in my last place and it became a competition. trying to hit more steps than anyone else.

Without some form of achievement though some folk simply won't do any sort of excercise. If they set a target of 10,000 steps and think fuck it I'll have a cake at 9,500, chances are they've probably done 5,000 more than they normally would've done ... and would have had the cake anyway.

 

Just because something works/doesn't work for you doesn't mean it's not the opposite for someone else. As long as folk get off their fat arses and do SOMETHING there's no right or wrong way of doing it.

I'm with Maggie as in folk don't half over complicate things.

 

Fad diets, micro management and silly exercise plans that will never ever get adhered to.

 

But if an app helps someone get involved then so be it.

 

Gyms are ace because not everyone wants to go out running in pitched darkness on a cold Tuesday night when it's pissing down.

I like going running

 

I like analysing my performance after and setting challenges, especially mid run when I'm flagging

 

Prior to strava I had a watch and a rough idea how far I was running

Its simple to use to make sure your getting the right number of calories each day to assist with your weight loss / (if that's what your after) 

 

One of the best weight loss tools ever. Teaches people about the calorie concentration in foods as well as the motivational side of it.
