It’s free why wouldn’t they unless they are criminals on the run or something (eu citizens I’m on about) Just think if the real "Alan Smith" turned up after the person who borrowed his ID had an arm amputated. jayjayoghani Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 Had to go to A&E in NZ, my gf was in pretty severe pain. Pretty early on they were asking for our details, checked on the computer we were Residents of NZ (database of all visa info to hand) and therefore entitled to treatment. Even fairly liberal governments can have a ruthless attitude to care. Quote
miamiwhite Posted January 6, 2020 Author Posted January 6, 2020 As we've got an agreement with the EU re member states, why don't we make it part of the divorce bill ? Quick tally up of what we're out of pocket and knock it off our Golden Handshake to Leyen and Co...simple as that....more lives saved , Kent gets a nice Brucie in his back pocket, everyone's a winner 🏥🏨 If only it was that simple. Because NZ like most countries know what’s right and what’s wrong, it’s right and proper to protect tax payers money and we should learn that lesson. Edited January 6, 2020 by Mounts Kipper Quote

The NHS prides itself on being free and has not been in the habit of asking reasonable questions. NZ has it about right. To be fair we're on a different scale to NZ. They have a population of 4.5 million. The NHS treats over a million patients every 3 days. The infrastructure to build a database like that, keep it secure and up to date, train everybody to use it and deal with the fallout of people turning up without the ID would cost way more than we'd save. Again - it's not a bad idea in principle if you're starting from scratch - but it would be really hard to implement now. Don't forget about the 10 billion IT system developed for the NHS and never implemented. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted January 7, 2020 Posted January 7, 2020 Why not use the NZ IT system? If it works for 4.5m it should still work for 60m. Might just need a bigger boat. Quote

Might just need a bigger boat. Because there are already a huge number of systems in use across primary care, community and hospitals. It’s a crazy number of systems and legacy systems. A project to put something across all of those to suitably interface and interact with systems out there already would cost far more than it’s worth. And I’d suspect you’d not find anyone able or willing to do it. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted January 7, 2020 Posted January 7, 2020 It was a bit of a piss take. I don't buy the argument that a system with more folk can't be managed and would have prohibitive costs. In numerical terms, were not a big nation, and plenty of others manage it. As Kent points out however, is the vast amount wasted previously, on a variety of initiatives. Let medical folk be just that, and not burden them with with onerous administration. At the same time we can't be throwing our arms in the air and saying we can't do x,y or z. We need to toughen up and modernise. Starting by actually asking for money back, that has already been agreed would be a start. Quote
