B&m poundstretcher and home bargains all sell DIY stuff...

I'm quite grateful my missus isn't allowed out or she would be buying wall paper..

wickes do home delivery - my mrs has ordered a shed load of paint, decking stain, wallpaper, polyfilla, etc. its going to be a long summer

Because we are now American owned, we have been put on a 4 day week, 80% salary. Fucking madness. We blew our 2019 budget apart by just over 50% and have just had our best order intake month since early 2012. We are absolutely flying - big miners are panic buying industrial gearboxes!

Problem with big corporations. We are being tarred with the same brush as the US, Europe and Asia where most of our plants are in lockdown.

So he just bought 50 cans for £80

Why is Beer so expensive in the UK ? I can get a crate of really decent Beer/Pils here (20 x 0.5 Litre) for 10 Euros. You are being robbed.

Have we discussed Jack Grealish yet....? Saturday evening his mug is all over the media telling everyone to stay at home. Early hours of Sunday morning he's filmed abandoning his car after crashing it leaving a party at a mates. You couldn't make it up.

A few days ago didn’t EasyJet pay out £170m to their shareholders?
But is now using the government retention scheme to pay their staff?

Is that not a bit wrong. Same with Branson asking for a government bail out. He’s worth £5b.

Im happily to be corrected but these airlines seem shady as fuck.

This is why the government needs people to carry on working where they can to try and keep the economy going.

If everyone stops and takes out, it's going to get very empty in that treasury.

Even say 10% of the workforce still working, buying petrol, paying tax on purchases etc keeps some coming back in.

It's that fine line of who should be isolating and who shouldn't.

Painters and decorators aren't supposed to come into your home.

You can buy it and do it yourself.

Seems many places going click and collect so no need to go in places and get close to folk.

Yes they can..

Gov.uk sets out very strict guidelines on it though, and you can't work in the house of someone who is "shielded"

I don’t claim to know about the ins and outs of the economy/shares/dividends but that immediately jumped out to me as not being right.

It’s legally absolutely fine. Morally it’s abhorrent.

This is the grey area though.

Government guidance won't completely stop it, however medical advice given in answer to public questions on the BBC said don't go into people's homes.

It's not just to protect folk in the homes, but also to protect workers from picking something up themselves, maybe off a surface.

Painter neighbour of ours isn't doing anything at the moment for example.

If I was a self employed painter and decorator I think I'd rather be at home for 3 months with the £2.5k grant. Obviously if i couldn't get that and needed cash to survive it would be a different matter, I'd probably  apply for a job as a delivery driver instead and only paint and decorate inside someone's home as a last resort for now.  decorative painting and decorating isn't a necessity.

Agreed, though these jobs are a necessity to folk who aren't getting any money.

Difficult balance; do your own work and risk it, or do something less risky but for no doubt less money.

I think what we're seeing is the end of capitalism as we know it. People are suddenly aware of the way big business behaves as a matter of course. They're aware of the fact that its now crystal clear that many people on benefits are trapped by a system. Everyone is experiencing it now.

Even Boris has in effect denounced Thatcherism with his "we've shown that there is such a thing as a society".

The likes of Virgin and Easyjet are taking the piss. So are businesses forcing their staff in yet being unable to allow them suitable social distancing.

Everyone from the government down to the poorest in society is pulling together. Yet banks and big business aren't really playing ball.

It does not mean we'll head for socialism but I think the world will move very rapidly towards social democratic models after this - it will have to. The major fault-lines have been opened and the fallacies of the world we were rapidly hurtling through are laid bare.

Easy to say that about the grant but it won't appear until June in most cases. BY that point a lot are really going to feel the pinch.

Not every tradesman can claim either. I use part time work to supplement my income and have a lot of equiptment on lease, I simply can't afford to be paying for it, and not using it.

Plan of action I've got in place, I don't mind sharing it.. Because I have to work,

Customer esquires about price, price explained and new t's and c's explained:

1) Customer can NOT be present whilst work is being completed.

2) Furniture being repaired will be repaired near to open patio doors if possible, ideally outside the house and then brought back in.

3) Please adhere to all 2m rules whilst I am in your property.

4) all work will be completed whilst wearing PPE (I have to anyway as the leather dye's really get everywhere)

5) Have you had any symptoms of CV in the last 7 days, I will ask this again in a week before the work is completed, if you hide the truth and I spot clear signs, work will be stopped immediately and invoiced for the full amount to cover deep cleaning costs of equipment.

6) All work has to be booked in a week before being completed. If any symptoms show, please contact me to re-arrange the work.

I've been on courses which are aimed at cleaning and controlling bio hazards, and have worked in some pretty nasty situations (example being a guy with HIV who tried to go down the tracks). I have a slightly different viewpoint on this as I've already been forced to the front line with school which is why I caught it, I had no choice there. I have to work for my own mental health and to keep things ticking over. However I'm not going to work working flat out, literally one/two jobs a week.

I have to be very careful about my family, so I'm wearing overalls that I can strip off outside and the deal is that I put these straight in the washer, then up for a bath.

Once we get a bit of normality back and Virgin and Easyjet do some cheap flight offers and Spoons do loads of deals people will go back to behaving like they always did and all this faux outrage will be a distant memory.

Sad but true.

Yeah its possible - but the eyes of society have been opened. Already you see changes where people are condemned for acting against society's best interests a few weeks back that wouldn't have happened. I'm not sure any button simply resets us. Its not going to be a paradigm shift like the momentum nobs want but it will change a lot IMO.

it is a shite situation,  and you could try and get another job for now and you could also take a mortgage holiday if you've got one.

I sell and maintain Internet connectivity and phone systems to medium sized businesses - I'm classed as a key worker, as I'm maintaining communications systems for home workers (its all done remotely so I don't have to visit anyone).

I'm getting paid very little at the moment because no business wants to buy anything new, some customers have cancelled direct debits and not paid overdue invoices for previous work done.  Most have furloughed the majority of employees - those in key industries have moved a lot of workers from offices to homes, which involves unplugging the phone at work, taking home and plugging it into their home broadband or downloading an app onto their laptop.

I'm helping the homeworkers if they have issues, fixing faults, diverting calls etc - unfortunately there's no money in this at all.

I can't get another job because these businesses could fail if i stop supporting them. I can't get a self employed £2,500 grant from the govmt because I'm a Ltd company. I can't furlough myself because that means I have to stop work.

So all I can do is carry on for as long as possible, take a mortgage holiday, get a loan from a bank, not pay my vat.

fuckin shite - alcohol and DIY here i come

Keep saying it, the non- selfemployed might get it eventually

I employ myself Traf - there's 1 person in my business. I'm not classed as self employed because I'm a Ltd company. I have to be a Ltd company in my line of work.

There are going to be a lot of people seriously in the shit financially very soon. It really is a shitstorm brewing in all aspects of life.

Most of my work comes through social media..

If i run a Facebook boosted post, I'll get nothing but grief for it.
