I get the concern if he's perceived to have led discussion but from what's been posted here:

I'm glad he attended. I'm all for preserving SAGE as a scientific advisory group untainted by politics, but the ultimate aim is for govt to take the right decisions and if no-one else is asking probing questions there I'm glad someone did, because they sound like very sensible questions  to ask.

The key point though is that concern about politicians not understanding how serious things were, that's precisely the argument for having someone sit in who knows how to communicate with them in language they'll understand.

Agree with everything you've said there.

Decisions needed to be made, he pushed for it.

But the government have frequently said we are being led by the scientists, which is great, I agree with that strategy.

They can ask probing questions regardless.

What is not acceptable is influencing the groups conclusions before these are being proposed to the government as appears to have happened here.

They can overrule any scientific group, that is fine if they believe it is correct and will save lives. However, it appears that Cummings was influencing SAGE and that cannot be right.

“It appears”

Who says? You say?!

see the link posted by jeep.

Cummings was present at a key SAGE meeting in March and had an influence on proceedings.

The government earlier denied that political advisors influenced the committee.

I think you will believe the government account but I don't.

I said I agree with the strategy, the fact that they implemented it slowly is a reasonable critique shared by many people across all parties.

so we are saying it was the scientists who wanted to let herd immunity develop, and it was the government who wanted that to change to lockdown earlier ?

aye, would be interesting to know what Cummings was saying prior to the Imperial College report, because IIRC that was when the U turn came about

I don’t feel that we know enough to believe, or not, believe the government, or any, account.

He’s not like Alister Campbell - he was in charge of media and coms, not a special advisor.

Mandelson is a bit more akin to Cummings, but he also was an MP.

This is why Cummings raises so many questions on all sides of the house.

They do have (at least) one thing in common, though

As stated previously, the whole business around sage and who sits on it, acts as secretariat etc is long winded and open so as not to be unduly prohibitive.

It's role is to take on all different scientific reports from all over the place and to come up with recommendations. That science also can include economic, and the government can (and would be expected) to have input. That's not the same as setting out strategy as an individual.

By taking on board all the necessary inputs they came to a recommendation that has succeeded in its aims. Namely protecting the NHS from overtopping by a series of measures.

We've got opinions on here ranging from testing is virtually pointless, to being woefully inadequate.

Lockdown being too late, to being over the top.

And some ladies' tits being better than others.

Highlights what an impossible job it is for some of the key players, but thankfully they were prepared to make the decisions.

Campbell was Blairs bitch just like Cummings is Boris' bitch.

I wouldn't say Blair was Cambell's 'bitch'  - a close working team certainly and at the heart of government (in fact he made the change that all PR and comms people in the civil service had to be professionally qualified and not just generalists) but Blair, along with Brown, Mandelson and in the early days Kinnock, drove the agenda. He certainly played a key role and made other members of the Labour party uncomfortable (mainly those who lent more to the left) mainly because he also silenced them and their dissent.
