Wanderers Ways. Neil Thompson 1961-2021

My lad just asked me - Dad, if you could go to one BWFC game again, which would it be?

I was in the Manny Rd North seats & that day Ruud Gullet gave a masterclass in how to pass a football  50 -60 yard passes, straight to the feet of whoever they were intended for. After a while the home support at Burnden applauded him every time he did it, even the Manny Rd North applauded.

Yep I was in many road terrace for the only time and I remember exactly the same thing he was incredible that night

That statement makes any of your hooligan post null & void, proper lads were on the 10am train, in the pig & porcupine on deansgate and were escorted all over town arriving just as first goal went in. Fucking travel club FFS!

You are getting your seasons mixed up lad. There was a train strike on  Weds 11 Sept 2002 which made it a quick in and out job on the coach because there was no way of getting there by train.

Some great calls for matches to re-visit from the past. I’d like to add another; 2-2 at Turf Moor following Spooner’s broken leg and McGinlay not throwing the ball back.

Not a classic game but made for a proper moody atmosphere afterwards going back to train station.

That one came to my mind as well.  That Coleman equaliser was celebrated with gusto! Felt like I'd ran a marathon after that match, I was fooked!

My match would be the 3-3 draw against Newcastle in the FA Cup in 1976.

Huge crowd at Burnden, match that had everything, and when the FA Cup truly was a special tournament.

For the young posters who haven't seen the FA Cup when it really was special, you missed an absolute treat.

Loved all the European trips unforgettable but for me its Ewood Pork and Frankie stroking that one home never seen an away ground erupt like that very special brings a tear to the eye even now. Besides which I were 19 years old and times were fucking awesome, now im an owd mon.

I can’t think of a game that meant anything to me that i wasn’t absolutely totalled and my only memories are a hazy fog of ‘That was one of the best days of my life!’

Wrexham, Hull and Anfield are impossible to separate.

I can’t decide whether I’d go back and experience the whole debaunchery or  go back sober and be able to remember them with clarity.

Ipswich semi final has to be up there for me

To finish 10 points behind them in the league and to go through on away goals was great, unbelievable support that night some proper pissed off ipswich fans😀

Right I am going for the United 2-1 win. Here is why.

We beat them - enough on its own

just gone up and after great start were wobbling a bit

first to win there in premier league after going a goal down

Coroprate from work free tickets beer and food.

Week of game got a call that the other 8 in box not going. Could I get folk there. Yorkshire white plus 1 my dad and his mate 2 blokes from Bolton branch. Lad from work with a mate to drive. (My dad was disabled so struggled with away games - his last ever away game) only rule do not tell the top bloke there you are not staff

Lodger at time was member of Keighly reds, we met to drive over in their pub. ‘Come in after game we won’t take piss’.

Get over in box for less than one minute before I hear Yorkshire whites missus telling the wife of the one person we can not tell who everyone is that we are ‘Cambys mates, this is his dad.’  Her husband comes over, I knew him he did not care.

Free bar needed refilling, bets on. Got presented with a signed shirt.

Into seats saw a bloke I worked with (United fan) ‘no chance’ he said.

Into seats. Goal down , equalise, jussi double save.

Back to box. Bar refilled.

Back to seats Ricketts scored. ‘Can we play you every week.’ No Munich songs.

Back to box collect on bets Bolton to win 2-1 (Mrs Yorkshire) Draw half time Bolton full time (me). Texts from lodger and bloke in ground ‘fair play well deserved’

Few more beers, dad leaves can hear him singing on his way. Our host has to leave but he empties all cupboards of wine, brandy and whisky for us take with us.

Set off back Ring 606 through on second ring. Put on hold then on live after 20 seconds. Convince Yorkshire white not to sing Munich sings on speaker phone. Get asked what we thought of United ‘get a centre half and they should stay up’. Get put on a call with Gartside.

Back to Yorkshire go as arranged to ‘not have piss taken’ only lodger turns up. Other 30 went home. Watched game on that ITV programme that used to be about 8pm.

Got very very drunk.

We beat them.

If Carlsberg did football games.......it would be like that but with San Miguel on.

actually then, I'd go back to the 2nd one and find some way to nobble Barry Knight. I'm still waiting to hear he's died from covid.

Or back to Wembley that year and find a way to startle Holdsworth (firework or summat) enough to make him scuff his shot rather than blast it - then it would have limped in rather than Row Z and we'd have had the perfect of symmetry of 1st and last Cup finals at the old ground

Even though we lost that 2nd season playoff game at ipswich it was an absolute belter had everything, never seen so much anger from bolton fans at a game

aye, remember after the game going for a piss on the way out (long drive ahead of me) and there's a Bolton fan putting the boot into a sink - just reduced it to rubble. The fucking PA system goading the Bolton fans and their pitch invasion involving them coming over ballooning. FA never charged them for that - wonder why (Sheepshanks).

Sure some altercation happened in the lower tier when they ran on the pitch but yes some angry men that night

Couple of seasons later stopped over for the Sunday game and a few ipswich lads had a pop when we was out on the Saturday calling us cheats😀😀

I think there are so many options because we haven't won anything in most people's lifetimes.I mean major trophies not  the 2nd tier, the Sherpa Van, Asia Trophy, Lancs Cup or Dunfermline and district sheild which we have won.If we could have scraped a 1-0 win v Middlesbrough in Cardiff that would have been the football day of our lives, end of discussion.

For me the highlight would have to be beating the country's biggest club away from home. We have done that 3 times since the early 1960s and i attended 2.I think the better one was 2002/03  because it was so unexpected after a shite away performance and thrashing at Fulham and the fact they were the best team in the country,So if i could relive one football day again it would involve going to work in the morning, catching the Travel Club bus on Manchester Rd to OT and watching that late Kevin Nolan winner.

I can only remember beating the country’s biggest club once
