I might have been distracted - but I don't remember anywhere near this level of coverage/alarm when Russia annexed Crimea. Did I just miss all the hype or was it all much lower key at the time?

Look at the Putin thread that I started in 2015. Having interests in that part of the world, it’s always been of interest to me. I’ve said previously that people are more interested in the west and ignoring things in the east.

There was a Trump thread that went on for ever and no one was interested in Putin.

Blame the media or ignorance of the general public?

Putin has made it into other threads in fairness.

For me, I reckon many leaders in the West have been waiting for him to get old and die, or to lose his grip and get bumped off.

No doubt. His replacement's foreign policy will be exactly the same but they might be less competent.

Aye, just practicing and posturing.

There'd be little point in lobbing a nuke next door- they'd likely get the fallout themselves.

14000 killed. The Minsk Agreement a farce. It’s been building up to this for a while and the western media has ignored it.

I hadn't even heard of it until about 2 weeks ago.

Anyone in any doubt about Putin and his mob's brazen approach to body counts only needs to look at their handling of the Beslan and Moscow Theatre seiges.

They make the Waco operation look like a hearts and minds campaign.

If they steam into Ukraine what would our involvement be? Supporting Ukraine with equipment is that it?

Yes and sanctions. But who knows if public opinion changed - or there was some kind of mistake.....

Yes, we're not treaty bound to intervene directly. We've stacked up assets in neighbouring countries that are NATO members as a show of force but otherwise it will be a case of supplying money and weapons to Ukraine.

Classic war by proxy. If Ukraine ever became our enemy, its those weapons we would be facing.

So no involvement in terms of troops? Are Ukraine massive underdogs? So do they have a chance of winning this?

Aren’t they trying to join NATO?

No troops. Not least because it would probably kill off whatever popularity remains for Johnson (and Biden). That would put us directly in conflict with Russia and even though we already are in all but name, the prospect of escalation from the point where British/US soldiers are actually doing battle with Russias to what that could lead to are too extreme for anyone to comprehend on both sides.

I couldn't really say what the outcome would be in terms of Russia in Ukraine but there would be massive losses on both sides and it wouldn't be pretty. I think Russia is looking at some sort of "limited" war that takes a big chunk of Ukrainian territory and leaves the rest to be free, but in no doubts that its Russias bitch and a physical buffer between them and NATO.
