A View From The Other Side

Imps also ran a prediction thread before the game - there was a lot of Lincoln victories predicted which made it all the sweeter.

Their post match "Rate the Ref" thread included:

Quote

4 - clearly favored the bigger home club on 50 50s and did little to prevent their obvious tactic of fouling us early and often when we looked like we might start something.

Quote

4/10 Poor considering the number of fouls upon our players that went without event a warning
House was booked for dissent for having the audacity to complain that he’s been fouled 4 times

Quote

4. Massively favoured Bolton. Not the reason we lost but got a lot wrong, including missing a clear booking when House was being yanked back on the one occasion he got behind the defender, then booked House for having the audacity to complain.
One of those refs who probably prides himself on 'letting the game flow' when in reality he just ignored clear fouls.

Quote

3 we didnt lose because of him, that was down to shocking defending. But we were playing 12. Bolton had him in their pocket, complaining about every decision against them.
Essentially allowed Bolton to get away with fouling any City player who had the temerity to beat his opponent, may have given most free kicks but uneven in his bookings. We were unable to build any momentum a deliberate Bolton tactic.

Quote

A homer if ever there was one, favoured the 'big' Club, allowed some dreadful challenges elbows in the back, shirt pulling, to go unpunished, the other lot played him. The decision to give a corner for their first goal by the lino was dreadful, a clear goal kick. Did not effect the result though, but on the basis we need a Ref to play, 3.0

Personally I'd score the ref  Russell Grant on Twitter: "The wonderful Len Goodman has ...for letting the game flow :)

Reading stuff like that makes me feel like we've wrongly been singling Morecambe out for being the dregs of the sour grapes brigade. They are far, far from on their own.

There's some serious chips on shoulders among fans of the smaller clubs in League 1.

There were a good number of clubs who saw our & Bury's struggles, first & foremost, as an opportunity to be clear of relegation. Truly bitter that we managed to keep going. Our escape & initial struggle to pay everyone off was hooked onto &, apparently, we're fraudsters and cheats.

Lincoln, for no discernable reason, were one of these. As were Peterborough, Doncaster & Scunthorpe ... maybe a geographical thing.

We now know that Darragh McAnthony at Posh is a loudmouth with an opinion on everything & keen to share it. The others ... no idea.

Firstly, and I know it’s not fashionable to say so, but I thought the ref was a bit generous to us with some of the borderline decisions and 60/40 challenges etc. So I’ve no problem with away fans having a go at him, we would have been exactly the same especially at an away game when fans are a bit more keyed up.

But turning that into a dig at us for being dirty, or cheating, or the ref favouring a bigger club is, as said above, bizarre chip on the shoulder stuff. If we play at Sheff Wed or Derby and get physically beaten as well as deservedly losing to a better team, not 1% of me would turn that into hatred of those teams, or thinking they had bullied us or the ref is biased. I’d be aspiring for us to be able to compete with them, like when those 2 beat us last season and we knew they were superior to us on the day.

Really weird, fairly pathetic whinging from nearly every club we play in the bottom 2 divisions, it’s a new experience and another reason to get back to playing clubs our size or bigger.

Well said - but fortunately they're not all that deluded.

On the ref being soft I do sometimes think Santos goes a bit too far with the muscling players off the ball. Eventually a ref is going to give a free kick or even penalty for it.

I get showing them he is the boss but....

Strange though the other fans think we are dirty whereas I think most of the time we are too nice. Rather be shit houses that win than Fannies that get bullied. Let's see what happens when others turn up like Wigan !

I noticed on Sat we gave 19 fouls away, more than them and far more than was usual last season. Very few in dangerous areas, just those little ones that break up attacks / stop breakaways. Another little sign of evolution over the Summer maybe, we were a bit too nice and were done over too often with those tactics last season.

We are still trying to compress teams into their own half and seems Santos is stepping up even further forward then last year at times leaving us open to the quick counter as happened against WBA - so maybe the lads are under instructions to stop any counters at source by any means - hence more fouls. It's a fine line to tread because we don't want too many suspensions but there's no harm in testing out what we can get away with at this point of the season.

Will try and ensure it's a regular thing this year.

Chips on the shoulders is bang on, let's hope it's a similar read on Saturday evening.

Just a little post of appreciation.

Always a good read this.

Nice one mate 👍

Cheltenham forum is full of folk who only post reasonable opinions. Very few “let’s blame the ref” or “Bolton bullied us off the pitch” for excuses. Obviously most posts were complaining at the weakness of their team rather than the strength of ours but, here goes.

Quote

Game over after 30 mins

Quote

The midfield and defence are so much slower in the brain than Bolton, who know where everything is going to drop before it happens.

Quote

As per pretty much all of last season and so far all of this one, Town playing WaitingForTheBall and Bolton playing FootBall

Quote

Bolton different class.

Quote

Only one team looking like they wanted to play football.

Quote

Outplayed
Out fought
Out thought
Yet again shocking ref.

There is no plan B.

The system needed changing.

Hats off to Bolton. They looked hungry strong and full of ideas

The rest is just chit-chat about their own weaknesses and the dangers of allowing their best player to leave but not replace him.

Oh, and platitudes from @Wanderlust

Quote

Totally agree with the comments about the ref and Baxter's naivety - still undecided about him as his kicking is pants and the save from the header was unnecessarily over-dramatic. Think you'll be fine this season with a couple of signings - from what I saw I'd be going for some pace up front and perhaps a bit more steel in midfield but you guys will know best.

Just like to say thank you for your hospitality here on the site these last few days and wish you all the best for the rest of the season (apart from your visit to the Tough s#!t Stadium obviously) Might pop in then if that's OK?

Over dramatic 🤣🤣

does seem to be very self deprecating on other teams sites does ol’ lusty

100% correct. Always pays to be pleasant and not too cocky on other clubs fans forums if you want to find out what the fans think of their team. They were a nice bunch on that particular forum and were happy to give me the lowdown but some are absolute tosspots on some sites. I'm banned on all Vital forums because of that dickhead Jules at Lincoln gave me an unwarranted blanket lifetime ban.

And it was an overdramatic save - he could have stood still and stopped it but he obviously knew the cameras were there :)

Can't find any Fleetwood forums, but this lad seems to be in awe of us. 😁 From the video description - "Bolton are incredible, an incredible atmosphere and an incredible team."

There's something about that lad that makes me think @gonzo has been shagging around in Fleetwood about 15 years ago
