Just because GS has always done it doesn’t mean it’s always necessary. Some of the best international teams past and present only had/have 1. fully get it when we’re playing the better nations as it gives more protection. Mainoo might not be ready yet or turn out not to be the man but he needs to be given the chance to show that he is. As the other candidates are nowhere near it. but for the majority of our games particularly the upcoming euros and the group games in particular, we would be more than comfortable with Rice sat behind Foden and Bellingham. We can then have Rashford and Saka either side of Kane. Rice behind on the stones bit, you solve one problem and create another though because CB is definitely where we are weakest. LB for the tournament is also a problem as shaw is unlikely to be fit.
