Bolton Wanderers boss won't take risks with trio's fitness

By Marc Iles3 hrs ago

WANDERERS are willing to play the long game in an effort to get regular football out of the likes of Jordi Osei-Tutu, Will Forrester and Kyle Dempsey.

All three players have struggled to stay fit during their time with Bolton and though they are now on the comeback trail, Steven Schumacher is determined to manage their minutes in order to minimise risk.

Osei-Tutu has missed the last four games with a hamstring problem but has been used as an alternate right-back to Josh Dacres-Cogley and has also played on the wing.

He is now stepping up his workload on the training ground, and Schumacher believes he could handle football at a higher level if he managed to conquer his fitness issues.

“Historically he has struggled,” Schumacher said. “He is a player who is really explosive but he has just struggled to maintain that run of games, and it's disappointing.

“I think since I've been here, Jordi has shown in glimpses that he can be a top, top player, like a top Championship player, but unfortunately he just can't never seem to play the run of games that he's going to require, which sets him back all the time.

“He’s another good player I really like.”

Dempsey has discussed his latest comeback attempt, and his desire to prove wrong the people who felt the club should have cut ties with him.

The midfielder admits he has “rushed back” after some of his previous injuries and has taken a different approach after knee surgery in the summer.

“I don't know historically what he's done before I got here, but I know the back end of last season, he was desperate to come in and help the team,” Schumacher explained. “We were going through a period where we needed results, and he was an experienced one who's got some attributes that we can use and that we like.

“I think what's important again with him is that he takes his time. He is in the last year of his contract, and the last thing that Dempsey wants to do is come back from a knee injury, not be ready physically and then pull something else, or get another injury that is going to set him back further.

“Last week he was completely non-contact, then he's into full contact, he'll probably be another week before he plays a 45-minute game.

“He understands that, and he knows that patience is important. He said to me the other day, we had a conversation about it on the grass, when he does start playing, he wants to always be available.

“So that's it, maybe he has shown a little bit more patience than what he has done in the past, which is really good and I think it's sensible.”

Though Schumacher is guided by the medical and sports science staff on when players are available and what sort of workload they can handle, he says there is also a responsibility on the player to recognise the signs of fatigue.

“It has to be a buy-in from both, because the player will always come in and say: ‘I feel great, I'm ready to go, I want to play, I can make an impact.’

“The medical team do their best to say to me; ‘You have got another player available.’

“I think when you are dealing with players like Dempsey, Will and Jordi, you have just got to be mindful of what their history looks like as well.

“If there is a history where they come back in too soon and break down - what happened with Eoin Toal a little bit last year - then you're running a risk.

“This year I think we've managed Eoin really well. He hasn't played in the midweek fixtures, because we're trying to build his durability up.

“Last week he went away with Northern Ireland and played back-to-back games, so that's been a test for him.

“I think you've just got to be mindful and do as best as you can. You can never be 100 per cent fool-proof, this is going to work, but I think you've just got to be sensible where you can.”

Makes you wonder why he started him and McAtee on the first day

Must have taken a knock to the head in the warm up.

Same here. Doubt you'll get many takers.

Gutted for the lad, so much talent laid to waste. Good luck Carlos in just getting fit.

He’s on a season long loan.

Depends on the T&Cs of the loan as to whether he comes back.

Interesting to try to read into Schumacher’s opinions of players. We’ll all see it differently but I got the impression that he really rates Osei-Tutu above the others, sees Demps as an experienced but otherwise unexceptional squad player and doesn’t even bother to comment on Forrester.

Obviously SS sees all the squad in training and will make decisions on what he sees, but in the games we see, I struggle to understand how e.g.  Randall is the best option and prior to injury I liked Tutu but don’t see him as a top end of the Championship type player.

Opinions eh?

Dempsey is certainly a quality player at this level & actually does offer what it seems Randall struggles to.

Plus, irrelevant maybe, but I personally feel a player who turned out with a fractured vertebrae shows an attitude few of the other limp fckrs did last season and deserves a bit of tolerance.

You could also add good luck also to Collins , santos , jones and Tomo to that in getting better  all quality and sadly missed 😢

Not for Santos. He made his bed & he can lie in it. He took our wage for a season, had no inclination to get on the pitch, switched off, invented ailments, had arranged a move & left us to flounder.

Fuck, as they say, him.

You can add Lolos, Baxter, Matete and Murphy who are all now ripping up B teams all around the country

Well not quite!!!

Given it was only a paperwork issue that meant Forrester didn't leave in the summer and he's likely to be out of the door Jan 1st can't say I'm surprised.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've heard Gale could be out for 3 months... I didn't even know he'd picked something up at the weekend. Could be a huge blow that, Cissoko has not looked up to it at all.

That staff member I mentioned that was pushing for the 3-4-3 might get his wish.

Just been told the same. Erhahon out for 4 weeks too.
