That youth team that got to the FA Youth Cup semi-final had some good players at that level. I don't think Parky was ever into blooding youth.

Was it the 8 4 at spurs year?

If so, theres not many broke any pots, considering we were on the back of a pretty successful prem era

Other than holding, suppose cloughs next best, then?

Maher, possibly

Wanderers: Sievers, Hendrie, Gibson, Holding, Maher, Bailey, Lester, Wolstenholme, Clough, Youngs, Walker (Newby 88): (Unused substitutes: Campbell, Hamer, Nolan, Kennedy)

Hadn’t realised that Maher is back in the EFL with Grimsby after playing in Ireland (Galway) and the Conference (Halifax).

Clough doing quite well in Australia by all accounts which is probably comparable with League One in most cases.

I’ve posted this a few times in the past, but when we won at Sunderland (then in the Prem) as a Championship team under Freedman, Vela was still a teenager and was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. Then came his spell at right back, then his reinvention under Parky in the promotion team and gradual boozy decline in to a being a Poundland hard man. If he’d kept his eyes on the prize a bit more then I think he could have very easily carved a career as one of those players who specialise in bouncing between the bottom of the Championship and top end of League One, but his attitude never seemed good enough for that. Absolute shadow of the player he was, based on last night at least.

May be wrong but didn’t the club let him go because the academy was downgraded rather than him sticking two fingers up. Could be both I suppose

no he decided to leave to "study" abroad so the club let him go before Liveprool magically offering him a deal as he boarded the plane

Some in that team are due to turn 30 next year - frightening really

I always thought the sum was greater than it parts with that particular cohort, and I seem to remember they were nearly all tiny

Perhaps it's no great surprise so few made it

Vela’s debut against Everton was a cause for optimism, although at the time still a teenager . There was a rumour circulating at the time that Liverpool had offered 1 million for him sometime previously. Honestly felt he would be a star midfielder in the future but alas never happened for him . Parkinson did get a tune out of him & his assassination sliding tackles were a thing of beauty, when penalties weren’t conceded . Could & should have done much better.

Didn't Phillips go the same time as David Lee who spent the previous few months touting himself for the still occupied managers role.

Had we been churning out megastars or even Mainstays of the 1st team then Jimmy could feel hard done by. But during Phillips time we seem to have let more good uns go than we kept.

... And worth remembering is that Nat trained with Huddersfield to keep fit and they were managed by David Wagner who was Klopp's best friend.

What are people's thoughts on this guy?

He played 160 games for us which is a good effort. He's played 150 odd for everyone else.

The promotion season under parky I thought he was great, a proper number 8. Most the other times I thought he was a half decent harrier and not much else, every time I've seen him play against us since he's done nothing except bully a few young ones

I just wonder In different times under different tutors , could he have been better?

I remember he had a decent little spell as a RB for us under Lennon, his one & only really good season was in our L1 under Parky where was a was very good along with Morais, Clough, Sammy. After that he never kicked on in the champ but I if I remember rightly he got a bad knee injury first game of our champ return at home to Leeds & after that he just lost his way. All the moves post Bolton have been shite for him too, low end of the barrel L1 player now who'll probs be playing L2 next year.

You see these players who look like they will make it when young and they fizzle out.

I remember watching Ethan Hamilton playing for United under 16's, think it was his first game, having moved down from Scotland and I wanted to be a supportive (nosey) teacher. He just stood head and shoulders above the rest, was so excited when we signed him and had so much potential. Now just comes across as an overly aggressive whinge bag..

It pretty much stopped us going bankrupt.

Ken was a cunt but getting £9.5m for him and Madine was the greatest trick the devil ever pulled.

Unbelievable buisness and had both clubs pants down.

I totally agree but he was basically told to fall on his sword or the club was done and it would come down on his name . Pretty Brutal.
