Gomes was fine first half and looked our most likely goalscorer. I suspect his best position is as an attacking midfielder against weaker, low block type opponents, or as Traf says, a 2nd attacker. I'm fairly certain now that he's no wingback, though.

Did you actually watch the game? Gomas lost the ball all the time and he isn’t a wing back; that was a stupid substitution

What the Santos substitution?

We should have won it in regular time.

Jerome - got to score his 1 on 1 (in first 5 mins)
Charles - got to score in last minute when he's turned the defender.

Both just blasted it straight at keeper. It cost us.

Seeing the look on my lads faces this morning makes me feel shit for putting them through a life of this. Was like looking back in time at myself going to school all wound up and ready for cunts taking the piss.

Hard work being the only Bolton fan in the school in a town that fuckin hates us.

Told em chin up, chest out and fuck em, we know what we are and we know what they are.

Fuck em.

Encouraging to see that a second XI is good enough to go and compete at one of the better sides in the division. I know we didn't win, but we really should have. Missed 3-4 incredibly good chances.

We're not going to win points with Jerome and Bodvarsson in the side. JDB is not a goal threat whatsoever. Doesn;t even get into goalscoring positions. I know he's the 'foil' but the number of times a ball was delivered into a good area and he's nowhere to be seen was concerning.

Jerome is a willing runner, but his finishing is quite frankly abysmal. Charles had one of his nights and you knew he'd miss the penalty.

Sounds pretty negative there, but there were a lot of positives. I thought the new lads looked decent at wing-backs and JDC did well on the outside of the 3. Midfield were combative, but lacked a bit of quality and ball retention - Few things were bouncing off shins and first time passes missing their mark etc. Sheehan is the one and he's crucial to us.

Taking the new lad off and putting Gomas at right back; we had no choice with the Santos substitution

Whichever substitutions you are referring to; Santos going off or WBs being replaced, they were planned/forced.

Cogley came on as the only realistic option at RCB

The 2 WB subs came later because they haven’t played much game time.

CMG was in effect an emergency RWB cause there wasn’t much of an option.

If your point is you don’t think he played well there and don’t want to see him playing there again I agree.

Oh dear. See desperado's post. A better response than I can manage/be arsed with.

Gomes scored a great penalty for what it's worth

anyway

I don't think I've seen many penalty shoot outs in my time (which began in 91/92)

off the top of my head I can only think of:

- Norwich in the league cup 94/95 (lost)

- Villa FA Cup semi 99/00 (lost)

- Barnsley league cup a couple of years back (won)

- and last night

any others?

Norwich pens were season after. The 94/5 season was when we beat Norwich 1-0 and got to final

Beat Southampton 01/02 in the LC on pens IIRC?

Read my post. I said we had no choice of putting Cogley on when Santos couldn’t carry on. It was taking of the new lad off and putting Gomas in his place that I thought was a poor decision

I did read your post, you called a substitution stupid, I beg to differ and laid out the reasons why neither sets of substitutions were stupid.

Don't think I was at that one, we definitely beat them in ET on our way to the final

Think I was watching a different game.

Thought Morley was great - particularly in the 2nd half picking up a lot of loose balls, covering in the box, calmly passing the ball out. Pity we didn't see much of him going forward.

Thought the new guy on the left was bobbins. Had a heap of chances to cross/shoot/pass when we were on top, and ended up going backwards or losing possession almost every single time.

Worst game for Thomasson in ages. Nothing came off for him all night.

Eyes due to be tested next week.

I agree on the new LWB and Thomason but Morley was a liability and Iles give him the lowest score which IMO was right

Chester knocked us out of the league cup on penalties, donkeys years ago. Probably our first ever penalty shoot out.  We didn't score any of ours that night.

I think you're right, that was a grim night.  3 up from 1st leg, lost 3-0, no goals in E-T, missed every pen.  About 300 from Bolton, total crowd about 1,500.  Can't believe we had to play 210 minutes in a 1st round game in them days.

Injuries and fatigue weren't much of a thing then, it would have been virtually same team for the Saturday games either side.

Blackpool made 8 changes from their league game on Saturday as did Bolton.

It was was pretty much Blackpool reserves V Bolton reserves, so not much to take from that.

Ah, but our central defenders were playing with one leg! 😀
